While doing some cleaning in the basement this afternoon, I came across two cases of Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 that I bought back in the summer of 2007.

Would this oil still be good?

My new vehicle requires dexos1 certified oil, so even if this oil is still good, I don't know if I could safely (warranty wise) use it.

Any idea?

The oil is likely fine if kept sealed/closed and in a temperature controlled environment.

However Id not want to risk getting snagged with Dexos.

If the SKU is the same as current PP, you might be able to exchange it...

But I think the lawnmower or something like that is a good option.

Thinking that would be sm rated...

This is going to depend on the car and engine.

If it is turbo'd or DI, then it is no for sure....

More than OK, but I would not use it in A Dexos1 vehicle because of the warranty problems.

I just checked, and it is SM rated.

It's a 2.4L non-turbo DI VVT Ecotec.

Well, if it makes you feel better, I'm putting some sm rated Napa Synthetic I found in my stash into my 2.2 non turbo Ecotec.

I wouldn't try to stretch it out too much, but I think you would be fine.. I figure I'll get 5-6k out of mine....

I am using Maxlife that was bottled in 2004! Of course I am putting it into older vehicles as Nothing I own is newer than 2001.

It will work fine, might have slightly higher deposits than the SN formula and you won't have warranty receipts. They probably couldn't even tell much of a difference between SM and SN in a uoa. Do they uoa warranty claims on engines?

I would use it without thinking twice, but the warranty police will never agree.

Then I wouldn't hesitate to use it in your current engine.

No good...do not use !!!! I'll have my son pick it up from you when he is in Ottawa as he is based in Petawawa so he goes your way .

Pardon the slight tangent, but we often talk of oil and warranty issues. What if you use this oil, which i'm sure would be perfectly fine in your engine, both cases. And then you go back to using a Dexos oil and your engine fails. Is there any way they could possobly tell that you had used a non Dexos oil sometime in the past?
