There was a post a long time ago where somebody said that it looked like the additives in their motor oil had settled out to the bottom of the bottles. I can't remember what brand of oil it was.
If something happened to me like that I would never use that brand of oil again.

Well, I doubt that you would ever see it except in a white or silver bottle. You should just stick to dark colored containers.
switched to PENNZOIL Platinum 5w30 (dated 12/06) this past night in our '07 PRIUS at 5,400 miles and used 3 and 3/4 quarts to fill including fresh oil in filter . Shook these bottles beginning of week knowing .o.c. was arriving and shook them again earlier in the day and then again before pouring into the engine . After the 3 bottles were empty , looked into each and no deposits !
Must be all that hard shaking paid off . Hopefully , this car won't eat up the PLATINUM like the 2000 PRIZM (Corolla) did . If so , will switch back to regular PENNZOIL which held up very well in the PRIUS before this O.C..
I was going to say, just use Castrol Syntec in those black bottles and you won't have that problem.
I'm SURE Pennzoil is the reason for that. I suppose the analogy for that is how Pennzoil will be responsible for why I have to trade my 2005 AccentGt for a golf cart.

I just changed the oil in my Camaro today with Pennzoil Platinum 5w30...I noticed the same thing..granted it didnt look as dark as yours, but there was a slight ring in the bottom of the bottles..Oh well...i'm not really to worried about it.

Why shake the bottle vigorously? If the "gunk" stays at the bottom when pouring, why try to introduce it into the fluid?
I say "gunk" jokingly, as some here have said it's just additive.
I happened to have 3 empty quart-sized bottles of Mobil 1 5w30 hanging around that were emptied of their oil about 7 months ago. The bottles are empty, except for a very small amount of oil at the bottom that didn't get drained.
One of the 3 bottles had a little ring-around-the-collar at the bottom, and a surprising but small amount of dark sediment. The sediment got picked up by the remaining miniscule amount of oil when I shook the bottle up.
Don't know what it means, but 1 of 3 empty Mobil 1 bottles had sediment at the bottom.

I don't know if the sediment was there 7 months ago when the oil was drained from the bottle. I only looked inside the bottle today, 7 months later.
I had the Toyota dealership oil tech return the bottles to me, which I bought at Sam's Club.
I'm switching to PP though at the next oil change because of the wear control issue I read about.
