You should not have any problem with those oils. There may be some undispersed additive that was added but it should pose no issue in protecting your engine like it should.

I'm still going to call them tomorrow and see what else I can find out. I mean, whatever was in the oil is not now, and I think that is a problem. It was in there for a reason...good or bad, and now it is not.
 
Thanks for sharing the pictures. I am sure that PP is a well made synthetic motor oil. The BOGO offers and rebates speak volumes about how Pennzoil is trying to convert M1 users over to PP. I am a little hesitant to try PP due to the fact that it is still fairly new. I imagine that PP's formulation is still evolving accordingly. M1, while not the best choice when taking cost/protection into consideration, has been on the market for a long time. I imagine that M1 is only making minor adjustments these days. Anyway, that is just my opinion with no basis in fact.

I do feel that PP has a good opportunity here to show that they are open and honest about issues with their product. They can go into damage control mode and chase potential customers away, or they can clearly state what happened here and how the issue will be addressed going forward. Mobil would take the first approach, which is why a lot of folks are not happy with them right now. Pennzoil could win a lot of new customers by taking the latter approach.
 
This question has been asked before on this board with no one knowing exactly what it was. I have seen this type of "additive dropout" ever since I first started changing my own oil, but only in dinos. No affect on my cars in the last 20 years. Its nothing to worry about.
 
Why I stopped using Pennzoil products.
Old habbits just won't die..Call me old fashion, but i'd much rather stick to my valvoline or castrol.
 
Kiefer, it's thinking like yours why the old Pennzoil sludge stories don't die either. It's outdated.

Perpetuating old myths is how these tired stories continue to make their rounds and why people continue unleash the "do you know what my mechanic said?" posts.
 
Yes, except i never tell anyone 'don't use Pennzoil'
I just quietly won't use it for myself.

Pennzoil is the reason why I had to trade in my Expedition at the end of season 4 for a Tundra.

The CTU fleet has never been the same after we used PP at BOGO from advance.
How can we support and protech the United states when we're buying fleet from Japan?

maybe it wouldn't hurt to shake these oils every month or two to help with the settlement . I'm still going to use the regular and synthetic blend for now in the older vehicle . Will shake each bottle vigorously before putting it in as well . Seems like all the U.O.A.s and usage by others would have pointed out an issue with the PLATINUM and their other oils . WHERE'S UTAH BILL WHEN YEH NEED HIM .

Bill is probably at Checkers Auto Parts picking up another case of 49 cent conventional oil.


When I spotted this with Havoline Synthetic, I just shook the remaining quarts before I poured the oil.
 
checked out bottle of conventional PENNZOIL (Ol' Yella )( dated JUNE '07 ) and a bottle of the PENNZOIL S.U.V., TRUCK ,and Mini-Van Synthetic blend ( dated FEB.'07 ) , both being of 5w30 and there was no residue in the interior bottom or sides of these bottles . So , apparently the PLATINUM only has this issue , how many , who knows .
 
will likely call PENNZOIL myself and try to get a straight answer , the more calls they get on this issue , the more likely to get an inquiry on the topic . GOOD LUCK and keep us informed .

Good luck on the phone call though. I'm pretty sure it's additive separation. But as to the effects of this happening, I'm not sure.
 
So, does this mean that I should move my stash indoors? My garage gets really, really hot in these 100F days. I have some Maxlife and Havoline DS sitting on the shelves and now I'm thinking that if some adatives are heat activated, then my stash is going to get all sludged up!

Q & A: Stored Oil vs. In-service Oil Life

"I heard that oil has a shelf life of one to two years, but oil in service can last for several years. How is this?"

What you have alluded to is true. Oils do have a fairly short shelf life compared to the length of time they can last in service, if properly maintained.

The issue here is additive solvency as it is commonly referred to. Chemically speaking, "additive solvency" is a bit of a misnomer, as many additives are mixed or suspended, rather than dissolved in the base oil. When the lubricant is stored for an extended time, the additives can settle out. This is particularly true of lubricants that have high additive treat rates, and leaving such oils sitting for extended periods can leave a thick sludge at the bottom of a drum. The problem is exacerbated by base stocks with a high nonpolar content, given that many additives are polar in nature.

Using the oil effectively keeps the additives well mixed. If you can limit particulate and moisture contamination to the minimum you will avoid particle scrubbing, water washing and other destructive depletion reactions. As a result, your oil will likely last for a substantially longer time than its shelf life.
