Formula Shell any good?

My Dad's shop has been using Formula Shell for as long as it's been on the market. They haven't had a single oil-related problem when used with the proper OCI.

This weekend Formula Shell was on sale at my local Target (Tar-zhay) for $2.29/qt. Would this be good stuff for a 5K OCI, about 75% city driving, 850-900 miles a month, no real cold weather?

If your OCM stays happy, then yes... there's no problem. The Formula Shell can't be any worse than the bulk oils that the quickie lubes and GM dealers use all the time.

I'd go 5K or the OCM, whichever is first.

I went through a case of it on the Highlander.. I used it for an A-RX clean and rinse, and still have 4 quarts left to use. Its fine if you don't plan any extended OCIs with it. Should be able to do 5k easy. -- just use a good quality filter.

Bought quite a bit of this oil in various grades at 49 cents a quart (including rebate) from a local chain store. Using it (in 5W-30) mainly in my 2006 Nissan Frontier which while still in warranty requires oil changes every 6 months. The truck will be out of warranty in May and I'll run the present fill a full year (maybe 5-6000 miles) and analyze the oil then. I expect it will hold up fine to my fairly gently usage.

I used it for years and everyone loved my reports I posted. 5.7 in a 3/4 T 98 Burb that used to towed 10% of the time. 5k interval...
'99 3.0l Accord 7k interval

Search and you should be able to find my UOA's

They sell it at Costco and I used the 10W-30

Does anyone have any evidence as to the difference between FS/QS/YB? I sometimes wonder if it isn't all the same stuff in different colored bottles.

Not the same. Different base stocks and different additive packages. The only thing that might be close is that both Formula Shell and Quaker State both use Group II base stocks.

The what? The Obsessive-Compulsive Monitor?

Oh, you mean the oil life thingamajig. I think it will. I'm at 3000 miles into the current OCI, and the little robot in the dash reports 57% oil life left.

Maybe I need to pass by Tarzhay and stock up, then O'Reilly's for a Wix filter. . . .

My question about the above stated is this. If Formula Shell is a Shell product and they create their own add pack for Pennzoil and Quaker State, then why on earth would Lubrizol make the add pack for Formula Shell? Not that I don't believe you Johnny, but why is that? Doesn't Lubrizol make Valolines add pack as well?

Since you sent me a PM asking the exact same question, I will post my reply to your PM here for all to see.

Lubrizoil makes additive packages for everyone. It all has to do with cost. Shell uses additives from Lubrizoil, Ornite, Infineum, and Afton. All depends on what they are trying to accomplish.

In case you don't know, Ornite is made by Chevron Chemical and Infineum is a 50/50 partnership between Shell and ExxonMobil.

And, just in case you do not think I know what I'm talking about, send a PM to MolaKule and ask him about what I said. He a chemist and tribologist.

What Johnny said.

All oil companies will buy from various sources. Some like XOM produce many of their own components, but also buy from additive suppliers.

Last I heard, Valvoline, Amsoil, RL, Joe Gibb's, Castrol and others use Lubrizol as an additive supplier. They may buy additive packages, or certain specific additives then buy from another source.

Johnny,
Sorry if I sounded accusatory. That was not my intent. This is why I stated in my message that it's not that I don't believe you. Because I do believe you. I was simply inquiring on something that I thought I had heard somewhere else and simply wanted to confirm if that was wrong. I apologize for that.

I'm about 1.5-2 weeks away from trying Formula Shell 5W20 in my 93 Aerostar. The PB deal was a hammer deal and certainly worth giving it a try.

Was looking for FS at Walgreens with rebate 4/5$ and 2.25 on sale. Short stocked though.

Ran across 5qt jugs of QS at local Wally for $10.50 in good supply, all weights including 5w-20, not too shabby. Also a SOPUS product.
