forgot to cancel a couple property tax exemptions after moving?

I filed a form cancelling a couple tax exemptions today that I had on my home because they no longer applied. I know they give you two years to apply late to receive these exemptions, but I wonder if it's the same when it comes to cancelling them. I called two counties, and neither of them had an answer as to whether are not I'm going to be charged late fees. The property taxes are paid up, but this is of course with the exemptions. I just want to remove it from one property and apply it to another. This is for the 2023 tax year, so it hasn't been that long. My realtor was the only one who said, no they'll just make you pay the difference basically. So, whatever the amount is without the exemptions. I just hope I don't get nailed with a bunch of penalties, but I figured I better correct it soon than later. Anyone have experience with this? I figured we have enough knowledgeable people on here to know what the answer would be lol

I dont have an answer to your question but having dealt with the state in the past I found that when you make an inquiry about taxes its best to do it in writing and with a certified letter. It can take a very long time to get an answer and if they decide you own interest and penalties you need to document a date certain when you tried to take care of these.

Well I have copy of the cancelation form. This is why I don't bother with this stuff because when you don't play by the rules they make up they'll just take back all your tax savings and then some. Then again with that being said I don't think the tax savings was more than $500-$600, so how much of a penalty could they possibly tack on?

It would be impossible to comment on your specific county. There are over 3000 counties in the USA. Throw in a mix of states and makes it even more complicated.

Places I lived, all taxes are paid in arrears. So your 2023 taxes were just paid this year. It sounds like you are talking about two different counties. So the exemption you are applying to your new residence has no bearing on what is going on with the old residence.
This is the way I see it. However that means nothing. But if it was me and I filed what was to be filed with the old county I wouldnt worry about it and I would certainly take the exemption in the new county. Repeat - this is just my opinion.

Ps I doubt very much you would owe more than any back tax but again, there are over 3000 counties and 50 states all with different rules.

Yeah I'm hoping I just have to pay the difference. All i'm trying to do is remove it from one property and apply it to another. One property i'll owe and the other I'll get a refund for the difference, but I just think it's alarming that they don't know if you have to pay any late fees. The lady was like, well you have two years to apply, but she wasn't sure about being late on cancelling it. They also said this whole thing is going to take while for them to process. Like 8 weeks to remove it, then probably the same amount to re apply it.

Yep, it’s frustrating. Dealing with anything under government control when you have a question.
