I've read a lot of negatives on the champions and some positives from a few of the Ford forums before I changed mine. The plug was redesigned by Ford. I went with MC plugs and was rewarded with smooth operation.

There seems to be a lot of confusion over the engine noise of these motors as well. They are loud! There is so much out there about cam phasers I actually thought mine were bad. Took the tops off and it seemd fine so I only changed VCT's (again, new improved design from MC). Perfect....but I still have noise BECAUSE the fuel injectors on these guys are plain ol loud. That noise is often mistaken for cam phasers.

If anyone needs MC plugs and COPS for the 5.4 3v PM me. I have a set I picked up before I sold mine for a 15 F150.

Google "AFM lifter failure." Pretty comparable aggravation level for affected owners.

You can find common problems on any mass produced engine. The good thing is there are usually common solutions.

Yep, I forgot about DOD with the 5.3 engine. I don't think the 4.8 had it, though. The intake manifold issue was fairly easy to do. I helped a friend do his and it took us a little over 2 hours and neither of us ever did this job before.

4.8's didn't have AFM, I do remember that, as for a while I was thinking of getting a GM and didn't want AFM. 4.8's didn't have that (nor the better six speed auto).

Thanks for the information. How many miles have you used the Champions in your car?

Wayne

I changed the plugs out at 35,000, and the champions have been in there for 20,000 miles with no issues. I set the gaps at 0.045". I think the people who had "problems" with the champion plugs probably had some other issue that was causing the problem. Like a bad coil or they didn't get all the debris out of the coil boot socket when they changed the plugs. Champion has only been making spark plugs, like forever.

I had my plugs changed out at 73K by someone who knew how to do them and replace with MC....250 dollars later.....then the exhaust manifold cracked. Sure enough, those exhaust studs are pure junk and they had to drill it out with the block still on the truck.....430 dollars later.....geesh.

LOL! So true. My understanding of the 2V issues was that it existed for the simplification of automated plug installation. The small number of threads were deemed adequate for proper clamping and not threading the top portion of the tube made it so that the plugs could be dropped into the tube and self-centre for tightening.

The 3V issue with the elongated electrode was probably a great theory which was quickly found out to be not so great in application.
