If it's a FWD Taurus it will never be accepted by the LE community as a legitimate replacement for the Crown Vic. A true pursuit vehicle needs to be RWD. Chevy found out the hard way with the Impala and that's why they're bringing the Caprice over from Down Under.

I suspect this new cop car will be based on a stretched Mustang platform, which is itself based on the old Lincoln LS and Jag S Type platform.

Have to be registered to read that link.

oops sorry. Well it's Automotive News and the story says the new police car will be based on Taurus "underpinnings" and the twin turbo V6. Should be interesting.

That will be a mistake, IMO. The new Caprice and the Charger will be preferred by law enforcement.

I can sort of understand the preference for rwd by police, but for high speed driving I'd be afraid of the solid rear axle catching a few bumps mid corner and require some fancy driving to keep it on the road...
I don't know how they would hold up but a turbo forester would have to be a pretty good cop car. AWD, more ground clearance, space for equipment.

More things to break with FWD. Less control at speed. Solid rear or not, the CV was a pretty decent pursuit vehicle which handled OK for its size. It didn't beat you up like the Camaros did. Back in the old days with the Mustang LX with the 5.0, more officers were crashing because of the light rear ends in those cars and they were swapping front and back trying to accel out of curves.

I understand the want of RWD for a cop car, but what about in the winter time. The cops here have to rent Explorers from the Ford dealer when it gets bad. I regularly zip by stuck Crown Vics in my Focus.

Agreed. Ford is really making more decisions to try and become the new GM. One dumb decision after another. the law enforcement community will SHUN a FWD pursuit car.

The article SPECIFICALLY mentions the car will be RWD...........

That's the question I had. That's why I thought the Falcon platform would have been the obvious choice......

Not sure on that one...Though there are a sprinkling of Chargers around most departments went back to the CVPI...IMHO I think most departments will stick with Ford.

Since most departments have been getting Crown Vics with no issues since the 80's I think they will defintely try out the new Ford and most will stick to it.

I really don't understand this comment. Ford is the one auto company that has been making all the right calls over the last 4-5 years. Their corporate direction is a complete 180 from GM's.

No, it says that "speculation and rumor point to it being RWD."

I VERY much want it to be RWD, either the Lincoln LS platform, stretched, or something from Australia. I've seen several discussion forum debates on this. Right now, nobody seems to know if it will be Taurus based or RWD. Likely, they haven't said because they're waiting for their focus groups to give them direction... sigh.

Given the time frame indicated, they better have this decided very soon.

The speculation about the speculated car indicate that they speculate that it will likely be RWD then

“Ford’s commitment to the law enforcement community produced the Crown Victoria, the benchmark police vehicle,” said Lt. Brian Moran, fleet manager of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and a member of Ford’s Police Advisory Board, in a statement released to the media. “This commitment has continued, and Ford has been working closely with the Police Advisory Board on developing the new Police Interceptor. I am confident that the next-generation Ford police vehicle will meet the future needs of the law enforcement community and will set the new standard.”

I am sure the Police Advisiory Board would not encourage Ford to make a F.W.D. Police Interseptor.

Both the GM/H Commodore/Caprice and Ford Falcon chassis are IRS. IIRC the Comodore uses a modified semi-trailing arm, and the Falcon a 5 link.
Even the Holden ute (pickup) is IRS, Ford sticking with cart springs on their Falcon based commercials.
