The fact is The Ford is a better truck has a better suspension and a stouter frame and arguable the better drivetrain. My mileage in a supercrew 4x4 f150 with the 5.4(my company truck) was 18.5 MPG last tank and that included city, Highway and oilfield(dirt roads some 4x4). Despite 40k miles of oilfield type service there are no squeeks or rattles and I have never had a want for more power. Brakes are great and the ride is comfortable.
Matter of fact I plan on bidding on the truck when the company decides to surplus it.
See I grew up in a GM family, all GM 99% of the time. My uncle and many of my friends had Fords and suffice to say both the GM and Ford car's had lots of problems(Car's now). I went with an 01 Impala and drove it for 7-8 years and I can't believe how much lemonade I drank from the Lemon stand. The car is with my brother and is now a pavement weight since the BCM went ape**** and needs to be replaced among other things. My one uncle has a 1980's Chevy pickup with a hydrolic lift gate. Thing has over 650k miles on it, rust in places you do not want to know, a door that will not latch properly(tied with a rope to a inner placeholder to keep it closed. He's had it for over 15 years(bought it used with some 150k on it for 4k). The engine and trans still run like new, he refuses to give up on it until it gives up on itself.
I had buddies with Ford Pickup's and I never thought i'd say it but their truck's are build MUCH better than their cars(both GM and Ford). His truck was put through [censored] and back, towing 90% of its life in 10 years, 200k miles. General maintenance only, sounds like my Jeep does now, kinda like a diesal sound lol, still runs strong and cranks like my Jeep does on the first turn of the motor.
Of the big 3 US maker's, i'd rank em Ford and Chevy, then Dodge(they get style points, I love the 08 Ram look). Reliability of a pickup is determined by the care taken to assemble and the maintain it.
My other buddy has a Ranger that he loves to death. He got the truck when he first started driving 13 years ago and went on to become a Ford Motor tech(he has a fetish for Ford). Still has it, and wants his son to get it when he's old enough(he's 5 years old now). Truck still looks new with 300+ miles, purr's like a kitten.
