I just bought a new 2008 Ranger on Tuesday. Last night I was checking the fluids and looking for possible places to install a bypass oil return line. I found that the oil has a bright green dye in it. The dye was especially saturated around the filler cap and it's o-ring.

This is the 2.3L Duratec motor. Is this common practice now?

Maybe thats how they can tell you've never changed your oil if you bring it back at 25K with this noise in your engine, LOL

The leak detection is probably more realistic.

Service dept says it's normal and will be gone within 2 drains.

I've only put 3 miles on it so I can't comment on mileage. Yes, the base motor is the 2.3L DOHC Duratec -143 bhp.

Not too bad for a base engine. Especially considering the 1994 Ranger that I used to have only had 98 hp... It couldn't even get out of it's own way, let alone anyone else's way. That was one miserably under-powered vehicle.

It is not that great though in the big picture..In 1986 a Toyota 22RE I4 made 116HP in stock trim so fast forward 21 year's and we have only improved on that a little bit!!! I mean you would think that Tq and HP and fuel milage would be way up in 21 year's!!!I can not recall off the top of my head what the current Toyota 2.7I4 makes in the bas Tacoma but I will find out.

Is your Colorado a 4 banger or the 5 banger? Besides, you have a significantly larger displacement, so one would expect more power. You should have gotten the GMC Canyon. GMC grills look great. Chevy grills IMO are kind of ... well, to put it kindly, lame. Yeah, I am pretty much a Ford guy, but the new modular engines drove me to a Chevy motorhome and I like it, but would still like to replace the grill with one off a GMC.

Exactly what it is! It sticks around for a long time and can be checked for how many times you changed the oil. Still detectable at 35k? You only changed your oil three times....!

So maybe it would be good to change the oil excessively, like 10 times in the next 10,001 miles, just to get rid of the dye, and make sure they can't nail you for lack of maintenance, or am I overboard?

You can't compare different manufacturers. Sometimes, you can't even compare different family of engines from the same manufacturer.

Honda produces 240 Horses out of a 4 cylinder F-series 2.0, while only 160 hp from one variant of 2.0 K-series, and 200 hp from another variant of the same engine.

Also, engines for different applications are tuned differently. The F-series 2.0 makes 240 Horse at around 8000-8500 RPM, while the K-series 2.0 makes 160 HP at 4500-5000 RPM.

Also, don't forget the torque. The 240 hp screamer only makes about 130 ft. lbs of torque, while the 1975 Lincoln Continental that was rated at 95-100 HP makes 300+ ft. lbs ot torque to move that heap of metall.

You know if you really want to mess with them go get some Royal Purple and put it in there then go back and tell them your oil turned purple......
