What Chinese ev did your father own? By all accounts the BYD seems to be even higher quality than the Tesla which also has some Chinese made parts in it even the ones "Made in USA". Please, you are entitled to your opinion but don't peddle it as facts.
You take on Chinese manufacturing is right out of the anti Chinese playbook, in reality it is far different. I am no fan of Chinese goods but they do make some quality product with someone holding a gun to their head. How many people buy Milwaukee tools, Iphones, laptops and PC's all with good USA names without a second thought to where they are made or who actually owns them.

This part is on a made in USA Tesla 3..

To late to edit: I should have said "I am no fan of Chinese goods but they do make some quality product without someone holding a gun to their head".

The BYD Seal is a serious competitor in the EV market. Its front and rear evoke the Taycan and the sides evoke the Model 3. This is no accident.
The chassis incorporates a structural battery pack, just like Teslas and Taycan; it is solid. The interior will be attractive to many; it is pretty techy but more traditional (buttons, etc) than the Model 3/Y.
Acceleration is near Tesla speeds, which make it faster than most other vehicles costing much more. The e-Platform 3.0 is pure EV, making it better than the dual purpose compromise many EVs use. Handling and range take a back seat to the Model 3.

BYD is a serious competitor to all makes, and not just the EV market.

No doubt, but much more of a competitive threat to TSLA because all their eggs are in the EV basket.
That's only true if everything else is equal, and it's not.
From a business perspective, Tesla has strong profit margins, cash reserves and new factories. Other companies lose money on their EV business; that's where the pressure is. BYD ceased making ICE vehicles, but focuses on hybrids and pure EVs.

Beyond that, the big guys' margins are pretty slim.
Of course cars are not Tesla's only product.

Informal observation. TSLA is doing extremely well. A 80 year old guy that I go to church with is in the market for a TSLA. He has numerous vehicles, to include a late model bronco.

He can't buy a TSLA. He reports he gets a call that a TSLA arrived, and in the hour it takes him to get to the dealership the car is sold.

In our small town they had a TSLA evening meetup on a Sunday night at a local beer only pub. The meetup was to discuss TSLA. Standing room only crowd, on a Sunday night.

Can't deny the above information. TSLA draws interest in vehicles, where no other manufacturers do. When a 80 year old retired guy that drives a bronco wants one, has the money, and still can't get one- that is critical information.

And of note, I was personally burned by TSLA again. At 1am at the sea airport two weeks ago, Uber sent a TSLA to pick me up. After 25 minutes, the TSLA arrived. The driver then said he didn't have enough charge to take me 35 miles away, and cancelled me. I had to wait another 30 minutes for a Uber.

TSLA is a toy to me, but so are $1k USD Iphones, but they both sell like hotcakes.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree on this too. We are talking about cars aren't we? TSLA does not make ICE vehicles which last I heard are still selling quite well. Hyundai/Kia, BMW, Volvo, Honda, etc. are starting to offer some nice EV's. IMO a lot nicer looking than TSLA with much better fit and finish. Give them some time, along with BYD, and Elon and company are going to have their hands full. In fact looking at the recent stock action they might already have their hands full. Have a look at Toyota's earnings, they did very well thanks to ICE and Hybrid.

Perusing problems reported to agencies , not all inclusive (Dolphins have been in certain dry, salt free regions about a year)

Many of the common logged complaints are pretty meh
but hidden rust all over, getting blasted with white powder from hvac, OTA updates bricking cars, power loss, charger failures and a constantly dead 12v battery are concerning

Multiple “under hood” fires reported (not battery) are also concerning but I lack the language skills to understand the context.

Then there are the “other” domestic BYDs

Radio and electrical system malfunction

  • The radio turns on itself after parking the car, even when everything else is turned off.
  • The frequency of occurrence has increased over time.
  • Suspected connection to the 12V battery issue, which drains quickly if the traction battery charge is low.
  • Over the air updates sometimes brick the car requiring a warranty visit

Severe fogging issue

  • Locking the car normally causes windows to fog up.
  • Fogging can be prevented by performing a specific lock/unlock sequence multiple times an hour.
  • Believed to be an HVAC configuration issue.

Windshield fogging issue

  • Extreme fogging is observed in specific conditions.
  • Inability to run the air conditioning on recirculation mode and heat on maximum to manage moisture absorption.

Power failure issue

  • The car suddenly became unresponsive without any warning or indication of a problem.
  • Discovered the starter battery had a very low voltage reading.
  • Recharged the battery successfully and installed a Bluetooth battery monitor.
  • Highlighted deficiencies in customer care and support, including limitations on battery replacement.

Sunshade issue

  • The sunshade is stuck in the fully open position and unable to close.
  • Attempts to resolve through menu options and initialization methods have been unsuccessful.

SIM card issue

  • No data activation despite waiting for the specified period.
  • The original DiLink screenshot lacked an ICCID number, indicating a problem with the SIM card or reader.
  • Frustration with customer care’s failure to identify the issue initially.

Apple CarPlay issue

  • Apple Map lacks turn-by-turn voice activation.
  • Attempts to resolve this by adjusting Bluetooth and iPhone volume have been unsuccessful.
  • Suspected a software bug causing the lack of sound.

12V battery issue

  • 12V battery frequently becomes completely discharged, rendering the car inoperable.
  • Temporary revival is achieved through trickle charging, but the battery quickly drains again.
  • Seeking information about the discharge-recharge cycle in EVs and when the 12V battery is topped up from the main battery.

Rust issue non-galvanized contact surfaces, brackets and other fasteners unpainted/ungalvanized areas under car and inside panels that aren’t visible during normal use

Charging issue and lack of quick response from BYD

  • Error message “Check OBC System” prevents charging attempts.
  • The car has been sent back to BYD for investigation; it took a long time to respond.

Evaporator/Condenser Coorsion / Failure

  • Large amounts of White powder would blow out the air vents, testing found it was aluminum oxide & hydroxide and car required HVAC components replaced

Despite all the above real common complaints against BYD they are honestly still doing better than most Chinese vehicles but considering the 1970’s Fiat level of rust prevention I would never own one here.

I don’t understand how he’s getting cars sold out from under him. You’re supposed to get a 72 hour window and set an appointment with them when they call. I would have been livid if that happened. I had a 3 hour one way trip just to pick up the car.

You can go online I think which most people do, order the car and it's delivered to your door. Surprised Jeff didnt mention it?
Tesla is WAY below the expected growth rate that the CEO mentioned two years ago. So low they have been slashing prices and why your friend is most likely interested.
As far as hic-cups in a specific area has nothing to do with the national picture.

If your friend wants a Model 3 here is the order form, takes minutes and will get delivered.

If he/she wants another model here is the page

Tesla's main business model has been the internet not car dealerships.

In any thread one can look up you tubers on any product or do an internet search on any product and service. One must also keep in mind BYD sold over 3 million cars in 2023 which is a mix of ICE, Hybrid and Full EV

Tesla only more than 1 million internationally and half or 2/3rds of that only China and only makes EV

SO three times more production = three times more complaints POTENTIALLY
