Mahzurrah!
Not a great week for my little fleet. Monday near noon the wife hit a deer just south of Walmart right here in town. Officer had to put the deer down it couldn’t get up. Just got word yesterday the 2017 Edge is barely totaled. So it turns out to be a double fatality and a draw. 🙁. Not a scratch on my wife though and no other vehicles or insurance companies to mess with so grateful for that.

We absolutely loved the Edge and are very disappointed to lose it. It drove wonderfully, was spec’d exactly as we wanted and hadn’t had a single repair in the five years we owned it (other than a battery). It’s an emotional loss as well as a financial hit. But we must move on.

Looking at another Edge but a bit spooked by the 9/8 speed transmission in the next generation. Also interested in an Explorer in the 17-19 range which would give us a third seat for grandbabies. The Lincoln MKX around 17-18 is also an option. While we’ve had no problems with the notorious 3.5 water pump across multiple vehicles, I’m thinking the 2.3 Ecoboost may be the way to go.

Thoughts? Don’t even bother with Toyohonda comments please, not interested.

First deer either of us have ever hit and we are in our 60’s.

Yes sir cars are replaceable a **good wife** is not so. If hauling grandbabies I would go the route of 3rd row seating. Are you just sold on the Ford/Lincoln brand? You said no Honda or Toyota's the 7 passenger Subaru Ascent is a nice herd hauler optioned in the 7 passenger configuration you get 2nd row captain chairs. It's on my future horizon when the wife's Rogue goes bye-bye 👋

That sucks. Very sorry for you, but concur "thank goodness your wife is ok".

Why we continue to support huge deer populations evades me. Most don't comprehend the economic costs of vehicle damage, personal injury, crop damage, forest damage, landscape damage, etc..

"Michigan motorists reported 58,324 vehicle-deer crashes in 2024. As a result of those collisions, 1,816 people were injured and 14 people were killed." https://publications.michigantrafficcrashfacts.org/2024/Deer.pdf

"At one point, Crumbaugh said, crop damage caused by deer was costing his farm $700 an acre. He said other farms in the area were losing up to $1,500 an acre." https://www.grandhaventribune.com/n...cle_e7cc52a0-1845-5171-80a8-81745178057b.html

Ouch. At least your wife wasn't hurt.

What about a WK2 JGC?

Great suggestion I have looked at them briefly but am not up on what is desirable and what should be avoided. They seem to be a bit more expensive also. I need to look at them seriously, they were actually on the list when we bought the Edge but priced themselves out.

Looks cosmetic? Can you buy it back and just fix it? Was the radiator affected?

Radiator is completely pushed up and smashed into the engine and partially folded over it. Deer must have been mid bound at impact it seems like not much to the bumper.

First: glad your wife came out of this fine.

Second: what was the estimate weight? Of the deer, not your wife.

I love animals of all types but deer have to be one of the stupidest creatures on the planet. One evening at around dusk I was stopped, letting a small herd of deer cross the road in front of me. Next thing I know was BAM! A big buck rammed our BMW E90 on the driver's door causing $2,800 in damage. The stupid beast must have been at top speed because it killed itself in the process. I may love animals but I felt no sorrow for the stupid thing!

We get a lot of deer in our fenced backyard. Weird how they get in there yet cannot seem to get out, so I have to open the gate for them. When we watch our grand dog I used to make a check of the backyard before letting her out to make sure no deer are there. Now I no longer check and let Tessa out to terrorize them.

Man, bad luck. My wife, both daughters and me have hit deer. Deer and narrow rural roads are just made for it.
