I have used Valvoline in my 8.8’s for years now, but recently got an itch to try out Amsoil SVG after scouring old and new posts on here about gear oils. My early 2000’s Ford’s don’t see severe duty, with the exception of my ‘01 Mustang GT (street car) that see’s the drag strip 2-4 times a year.

Both rear ends (F150 & Mustang) call for 75w-140, which is what I always use along with Motorcraft XL-3 friction modifier, as both rear ends have Trac-Lok.

Is Amsoil worth the few extra bucks? Would love to hear from you all that have experience with both. Honorable mentions are always welcomed.

I have used SVG 75w140 in two ford PTU'S having no issues so far in a high failure rate component.
If you have had no issues with valvoline I see no real reason to stray.

Its funny that dnewton3 brought up cost because I was going to say the exact opposite. I shopped gear oil recently at the part stores and was astounded by the cost of Valvoline. Well over $20 a quart if I remember correctly. With dealer discount, it was cheaper to buy Amsoil, which I did.

Even the cheap STP conventional gear oil was expensive. I was buying something to top up a leaky differential and didn't need anything special, but wow, its gotten out of hand.

Valvoline gear oil isnt anything special, the only reason I would use it is for the squeeze bags.

I would prefer HPL, Amsoil, Motul, or redline.

If I wanted something from walmart Mobil 1 gear oil.
flex pouch ftw

just did the rear diff in my truck two weekends ago, easy peasy lemon squeezy

valvoline is 13.99 at napa, or 15.49 at walmart.

holy smokes! That's over $60 a gallon. Can buy a 5 gallon pail of something like Chevron XDM 75w90 for around $120. Even after buying a bucket pump, it'd still be cheaper than 5 gallons of that stuff.

How would you even know the difference? I've been using Valvoline in my for Ford for 13 years. Never an issue. Only issue Ive ever had was bending the whole rear axle housing having too much fun in the desert. New axle, Valvoline back in it
