Please move if not in the appropriate section. What is the difference between the Amsoil ‘small engine oil’ and the Amsoil Powersports oils? Any reason not to run the ‘small engine oil’ in by ATV too? I already use it in my lawn mowers and snow blower... Thanks.

I use the powersports 0w-40 in my old Gravely tractors that have wet clutches. Amsoil says it is wet clutch compatible. Also the 0w makes starting easier. The 40 should provide better transmission protection in summer heat.

Back when I used Amsoil, my small equipment got the same oil that my vehicles did. Never really got into differentiating between their vast varieties of offerings.

Small engines (push mowers, tillers, etc) typically don't include transmissions and wet clutches. Powersports typically have a shared sump (engine/trans) and wet clutch. Those Amsoil products are application specific. I would not run the small engine oil in an ATV, but the powersports oil would probably work fine in a small engine.

I ran the Amsoil 4 stroke 0w40 last summer in the Craftsman 18 hp lawn tractor - no issues with it.

Many powersports engines have wet clutches meaning the clutch and engine sump share the same oil. There are some additives that are bad for wet clutches and therefore are not used (this is compensated for by other additives). Powersports also usually share the engine oil with the transmission so there may also be additional additives for this. If you want to run the same oil in ATV and small engines, I would suggest you use the powersports oil in them. The powersports oil will protect the other engines just fine.

From Amsoil's website regarding powersports oil"
  • Formulated with high levels of anti-wear additives that provide excellent protection for pistons, bearings and gears in transmission-containing units.
  • Wet-clutch-compatible formulation helps prevent clutch slippage, helping deliver maximum torque and power to the wheels.
