Following the OLM and Sig. Other

I'm trying to get my fiancee to follow the OLM on her Fit. It's at 40% with 10k miles on the Mobil 1 0w-20 and Mobil 1 filter. The manual says to follow the OLM. According to the used oil analysis I've seen from the Fit, the L15 engine is super-easy on oil. She drives ~50 miles per day of 95% highway, which is a constant 60-70 mph around here. So the oil has been seeing a very easy life.

If she makes a really big deal, I'll change it with more Mobil 1 0w-20. And, I'm springing for my first-ever UOA with this change to see just how long we can run the oil.

I'm glad she let it go 10k miles, and not the 3k miles she changed her old car at...

There was a guy here a while ago doing 20K changes on his CRV with the 2.4, he also used M1.

What kind of mileage does she get?

What oil is the Fit spec'ed for? The reason I'm asking is I'm pretty sure the OLM is calibrated for conventional oil (though I acknowledge I could be wrong), so having something like M1 in there just means you have that much more protection. My vote goes for following the OLM.

Though I will say this, depending on how many total miles are on the vehicle, don't get a used oil analysis yet. Or at least not if you're going to show it to her as evidence that the vehicle could've gone further on that fill of oil. The reason being is if the engine is still breaking in there are higher levels of wear metals during the first few oil changes on a new engine, and I don't want you to get a used oil analysis and for her to then not believe you when you say it's normal for those numbers to be elevated. ...Does that make sense? I agree with getting a used oil analysis to verify the OLM, but I just feel you should wait until maybe the fourth oil change on the vehicle to make sure the engine is broken in and all wear metals that are normally elevated when a vehicle is new are out so that you can get a real base to judge the engine and oil by

The OLM is calibrated for 5w20 conventional, according to the owner's manual. There are ~28k miles on the car. This is oil change #4. It's pretty well broken in. I changed the oil at 2000 miles, again at ~10k miles, then again at 18k miles. The first was Pennzoil Conventional 5w20, then Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20, presently Mobil 1 0w-20.

I checked the oil right before she went on a 5 hour trip this past weekend. After 10k miles it hadn't burned a drop.

Her mileage is about 35-36 mpg doing mostly highway driving. She said she got over 40 mpg this past weekend. Her driving is fairly spirited.

Getting the UOA before the engine was broken in would have been a waste. I suspect it's fairly well broken in by now, so getting the UOA would be okay.

..but he's not reading the used oil analysis to determine the shedding factor of the new engine. He's there to see if the OLM and the oil agree on being suitable for continued use.

To update: when she saw the price of the Mobil 1 0w-20 and filter, she said to follow the OLM. That came after I told her that her car had the Mobil 1 in there right now.

The Blackstone kit will be here shortly. Once the OLM goes to 15% from the 40% it is at presently, a sample will be sent off to see how accurate the OLM is with the Mobil 1.

The engine hasnt burned a drop yet. It seems to be fine going long changes on this oil.
