The problem with that is that our lawmakers aren't living amongst them. They're not getting hit-and-run by them. They're not living below them in an apartment. They're not living in the parts of town where Mexicans are hanging out in convenience store parking lots. In other words, they're not experiencing the real world, so nothing's really being done.

Yep. I've been saying for YEARS that I'd love for all these bleeding heart Mexican-sympathizers to go live in one of my last apartments for one month. I guarantee their views would change.

I have no issue with the ones that come here legally as long as they continue to act legally and morally once they're here.

Legal immigrants we should welcome with arms wide open. We need their skills now more than ever. As long as you live by our laws.
The illegals who are law-abiding, gainfully-employed for the past 2+ years, income tax-paying people who just happen to be illegal should also be welcomed, since they want to contribute too.

I think what John was pointing out was that besides basic rights as a human being, a lot of left wingers would have you believe that an illegal immigrant, living in this country, is entitled to all legal rights and protection we as legal citizens of this country are privy to. In this case, those immigrants are not equal to those that live here under citizenship, and as much as the "pro-civil rights" crowd tries to paint this as being a race issue, it is one that transcends race and class and has all to do with the nationality and country of origin.
Unfortunately, here in the US, when the the country of origin involved means that in all likelihood your skin is a darker shade of pale, it's very easy for a spin doctor to make this less an issue of illegal activity and one of race. And when said group pulls the dreaded Race Card, we all lose.
