I'm using dealership oil. For all I know, they could be putting in 5w30 ! Right? Well, I assume its AC-Delco 0w20 anyway. Mine is a 39 month 39,000 mile lease though and I will likely turn the Equinox in when done instead of buying it. Therefore, I just monitor everything and don't care much. .... If I had bought it to keep forever, I'd be using Mobil1 EP or AP 0w20 or maybe M1 AFE 0w30.
I get 2 free oil changes, really 3 now since the dealership over-filled the first one and GM gave me a coupon because of it for a another one. I'm about to get the last free one. I'll probably have to drain a little out after they overfill it again.

When you change out the factory fill, drain it, fill the oil filter if you change it, and only put in 3 quarts to start with. Run it a bit and check the oil level in an hour+ after shutdown to get a real level. This thing over-fills easily because it is s-l-o-w to drain out. Owner's Manual directly warns about slow drain-down time. (I overfilled it a little when changing factory fill myself with Valvoline syn, and I put in 1/2 quart less than I thought it "should" take according to the rated capacity, so its easy to over-fill.)

Thanks for the tip !! Yes, I did see in manual that they say to allow two hours parked before checking dipstick. You are correct, that is a *slow* drain down.

If you want to make it appear as though you haven't done an oil change, just drain/refill without changing the filter before you take it in for its "First" oil change at the dealer.

No need to leave the old filter on, just put a new PF64 filter and your good to go.

The manufacturer is *primarily* concerned with your vehicle achieving the warranty mileage with few or no problems. That is really the extent of their obligation, barring obvious design or manufacturing defects. I'm sure your vehicle will make it to [whatever the warranty mileage is] by following the standard service schedule, i.e., oil & filter changes every 7500 miles. As others said, if you plan to keep it longer, change out the factory fill sooner.
If I ever bought a new car and planned to keep it for hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles, I would change the oil at 1k, 3k, 7.5k miles and every 7.5k going forward.
