We just picked up a new 2016 4Runner, 4.0L V6 (MPFI, 24 valve DOHC, nothing exotic or crazy). Toyota says the first OCI should be done at 10,000 miles. It currently has the factory fill, which is Toyota genuine 0W-20. The dry sump is listed as taking 7.5 quarts, but changing the oil and filter says it will take 6.6 quarts.

What's everyone's feeling on this? I normally change out the FF around 3,000 miles. The only things making me think this one would go all the way to 10k is the fact that the sump is so big and it has TGMO in it. It also has a pretty decently sized cartridge oil filter. I have a feeling that if Toyota says it's ok, it's probably ok.

Just wanted some opinions...

Thanks

Stick it out. Remember the assembly lube gives the oil extra fortification.

The only thing I'd worry about is a dust storm.

Have done 2k-3k 1st change forever - easy to get on 7500 OCI from there (my OCI) - also a good time to put a Gold Plug drain plug in - have pulled lots of FE fuzz from those in the first full OCI - then it tapers away ...
There will be many opinions on this - but you asked for a reason ...
Cars/trucks only have to survive warranty from the OEM point of view - but you just bought a unit that can do 250k if treated right ...

I'm a fan of the early change. Although the OIL is surely good for 10k, there is assembly material floating around in there which is doing you no good - as 4WD mentioned he's gotten a lot of stuff on his gold oil plug the first few changes. The only possible harm in changing early is to your wallet.....

What did you mean when you said "dry sump?"

Freshly built engine, that's never had oil in it before. It holds 7.5 quarts. An OCI I'll get out about 6.6 quarts, with the filter change (6 quarts without the filter change).

Never changed early, the former LS400 had 380+k miles without engine work, E430 is 180+k miles without oil consumption even with xW20 instead of A3/B4. S2000 is 12 years old but didn't drive much, odometer shows only 60k miles, don't use measurable amount of oil between 5k OCI.

I am not a fan of change out FF early. The E430 passed the oil life monitor by few hundred miles with FF.

Agree completely.
Toyota doesn't use an official "factory fill" with manganese and molybdenum for break in purposes, so your first change should purge any excess assembly lube, contaminants, and metal filings.
Good luck with the car.

I agree with an earlier first OCI but 5k seems to be more reasonable, 3k seems like a paranoid approach. Do a NAPA uoa (in my area only $15.00 includes TBN) then you'll really know what's happening, no guessing or opinions.not really BITOG members will always give their insight.

At the very least, change the oil filter at 1000 miles. If its a spin on take it apart, if it's a cartridge filter that makes it very easy to look at all the debris that will be trapped in it and then ask yourself "Should I change the oil"
