At 258k miles, Ive finally decided to go the HPL route on my 2012 3.7 F150. Right now I have Motorcraft semi syn 5w30 with 3k on it in the sump. I usually run it 5k. I was thinking of draining a quart, adding a quart of HPL EC and run it 2k miles till I hit 5k then changing it with HPL 5w30 PCEO and do 8k ocis from here on out with oil analyses. Sound plan or should I do it differently with the EC?

That sounds like a reasonable plan to me. Presently I am doing something similar with a 2016 Honda Accord. The only major differences between your plan and mine are a) change the oil filter about a week after adding the EC30, and b) limiting the run with the EC30 to closer to 1000 miles. Given the age and mileage of your F150 you might want to think about an initial filter swap and then another at 1000 miles. I base that recommendation upon the assumption that your engine has far more deposits or sludge than mine.

EC 20% and an oil filter change mid way - cut & post of course!

I think you have a good plan, personally I’ve sort of lost interest in the boutique brand thing, BUT I can’t say that I won’t get back on that bandwagon.

I think part of maintaining a vehicle is the fun part of it…buying something that is the best (oil) and running it a distance. There are lot more expensive fun things to do out there, so why not indulge? I’ve already indulged/got it out of my system (Amsoil), but HPL is beginning to perk my interest up again.

Nobody says you can’t do both - I just needed assurance that my previous OTC synthetic was keeping up - and give the rings some TLC with EC30 followed by VRP - will go back to normal in a couple more OCI’s …

Good perspective, well said.

I waste more on take out coffee and we know where that stuff ends up.

Edit typo: originally said "take OFF" coffee LOL.

Put this in today at 257,984 miles

Will run for 1-1.5k and put in HPL PCMO 10W30 and same filter.

Ill cut open the filter from this run with the EC and post it

My passenger side valve cover has a pretty good leak that Ill have to tend to soon.

I’d love to run HPL in my wife’s new car from the start but without the certs I’m just doing the one change since I didn’t realize. I’ll use Schaffers till then which at that point it probably wouldn’t matter. I may do HPl ever now and gain since it supposedly cleans so well.

I did EC30 and ran it for 90 days/2k mi. There was no filter carbon debris on my clean engine but a subsequent 4k filter change on 6qt of HPL Euro no VII 5W-30 revealed on closer examination something otherwise. Stock up on filters and be prepared to do a 5K filter changes until the presence of carbon debris is sufficiently absent.

Since day one, the engine received documented 5K OCI.

Why would you decide to go to an expensive boutique oil as you approach 300K on a 13 year old truck?

Just keep it simple and stay with what brought you this far. Don't overthink it and jump on some bandwagon. Stay the course!

It's not expensive if you run it longer than other oils, which you can.

It's not expensive, considering most households throw money away on needless, unnecessary products anyways.
Many here complain about HPL and Amsoil prices - then go hand the landlord $1200 for the monthly rent and another $400 per month on a vehicle lease. Then they come here bemoaning on paying an extra measley $125 per year for two OCIs of high quality boutique oils.

Lets not even mention cigarettes, pot, alcohol, gambling, take-out food tips......etc..... unnecessary spenditures.

Where was all this "its not expensive" sentiment when other higher priced boutique oils were mercilessly bashed in the past, even though they too were good for extended intervals?

Any vehicle approaching 300K miles does not need a boutique oil. PP or M1 or Edge, etc. is way more than the vehicle actually needs, and they too can be run for extended intervals.

Bandwaggoning at its finest.
