So, with ambient at 38-39 degrees Celcius, idling with the AC on waiting for the light to change coming out of Shoppers Drug Mart, the oil temp gauge finally crept up to 100C.

And then the thermostat that controls the oil cooler must have opened, because the temperature then immediately dropped somewhere in the neighbourhood of 10 degrees very quickly.

Pretty cool to watch.

And this is of course with God's own oil in the pan: Mobil 1 0w40

Wow! The M5 obviously has a meaty cooling system, for both oil and coolant.

You've never even gone over 100C while hammering on it instead of idling? Most examples of high (or peak) oil temps I've seen on this board were from when an engine was under heavy load.

No, it doesn't even get warm beating on it at 240Km/H (on a closed course of course........). It appears that the airflow over things at that speed is enough to keep everything cool.

No I think Toyota 0W-20 is what's heaven sent according to this thread:

Anyway congrat's on hitting 100C. That's almost warm enough to start using a 30wt oil. Oh wait, you're already using a 40wt? I think you'd better try using the true heaven sent oil, TGMO 0W-20.

HAHAHAHHA, not a chance sir

Congrats. If I were you I would not use TGMO but switch to some good old Castrol 0W30. That M-1 stuff you have been using has served you too well and it needs a rest.

Grats! Any planned UOA on this report.

Yup, when I get enough miles on it. I still have the previous sample to send out too here, just been too busy.

This means the snow has finally melted on the tundra. Enjoy your summer while the suns up. And be careful, grizzly bears are coming out of hibernation, they are hungry.

BAH HHAHAHAHAAHAH, yes, my igloo is melting, which is our version of A/C up here. The huskies are trying to keep cool, as I've parked the dog sled for the summer

In all seriousness I wouldn't use TGMO although a member is using it in his M3 during the winter. With the oil up to temp' oil pressure just meets OP spec's. I suggested the CATERHAM blend for the summer (adding or substituting a couple of qts of Mobil 1 0W-40).
Point is any light 0W/5w30 will more than satisfy the engine's viscosity requirements and then some if oil temp's don't exceed 100C.

Regarding GC vs Mobil 1. The Cdn SM version of Mobil 1 0W-40 (HTHSV 3.6cP, VI 187) is lighter than GC (HTHSV 3.5cP, VI 166) at all start-up temp's. 20% lighter at 0C (32F) and still 10% lighter at 85F so it's seems a counter-productive oil option.
In a long drain oil I think the shear resistant PAO based Amsoil 0w30 would be a good choice, an oil OVERKILL is familiar with. It's initially lighter than the guaranteed to shear GP III based BMW 5w30 but I'm sure in service it's no lighter.

Oh yeah that's the nice thing about German cars. They are designed to be pushed very hard so they have lots of ways to shed heat. IE like a dedicated oil radiator on its own T stat. Do you have an oil pressure gauge? When the oil T stat opens you can watch the idle pressure drop a bit because of the increased flow.

120 is a slow idle for that car, your not pushing it until your over 160-170.

My buddy has (on a close course of course) has set the cruise on his E55 AMG at 170 for quite awhile and the car doesn't even care. Its stressed about as much as a Camry at 75.

I would not seriously expect OVERK1LL to use another brand of motor oil other than Mobil 1. I am serious XOM needs to pay him a endorsement fee and some M-1 coupons.

Yeah, this car is going to see Mobil 1 0w40 and that's it.
