Filter for low mileage long term use

Truth be told,any filter will be good for 2 years and 6 or 7k miles.
Except those little orange devils that is lol
 
is there an upper limit for how long it can be left on the car? can it go for 5 years and 6k miles?
 
I dunno really but I bet a typical media would last 5years.
A long time member here left a Wix on for several years and the media was fine. the outside can had rust on it.
The Wix is a fiberglass media blend so that's good enough ,as is the m1
 
ahh ok thats good, i dont mind paying the price for the M1 or the ultra, just wondering which one would better suit my needs or is the better filter to use.

Only if it's so restrictive that it causes the oil pump to hit its pressure relief. In order to do that the filter would have to be super restrictive due to debris loading. Keep in mind that a typical oil filter is only 1/15th as restrictive as the engine's whole oiling system.

5 years and 6k miles may be pushing it without a used oil analysis. Oxidation would be a factor after that long. You could always uoa and add to the knowledge base.

I think the OP said in his first post that the oil would be changed every 1 to 2 years, which would probably be OK if the engine was always fully warmed up when it was driven to drive off internal moisture.
 
Oil would be changed along with the filter so thats probably every 2 years. Problem is the car is rarely gets to full temp when its dricen it does a 10min 5mile drive.

Only worrying thing about fram ultra is the small inlet holes although there are 8 of them and 6 inlet holes on the Mobil 1 filter which are bigger so may be less restriction for a high revving engine.


I have the Izzy (1ZZ) engine, not the Yamaha Dizzy in your Celica but I have a similar PM schedule. The MR2 only gets about 3K per year and I run yearly OCI and a bi-yearly filter change. Truth be told, the Toyota/Denso filter has come back looking the best.

I used the Mobil 1 103, K&N, & Bosch, and the Denso has the most impressive after cutting it open. As for the size, for me it is less of a concern but your Dizzy does have more issues than the Izzy.

I have not used the FRAM Ultra yet, but it is on my list. A WIX is on there now. Ask me again in 4 years LOL

hmm that denso filter does look good how much miles/age was on that one?
i read the denso one has low 50%@20 micron filtering so i went to the Mobil 1 filter.

fram ultra is swinging it for me but if m1 can hold its own then thats fine too. whichevers better really.

Where did you read that? As far as I've ever seen, Denso has never published any figures.

It was changed in the fall of 2013, removed last week (12/2015), not sure exactly which month. MR2 had 53K, now has 59K. So about 6K, maybe a bit more but both had two summers of abuse. I cruise at 3,700 on the highway with the 1ZZ and a 5spd and around town keep it in the torque-band (3,500-5,000rpms) for spirited driving.

As far as the efficiency, I don't know. The Amsoil is the only source, and it is now nearly 5 years old for a promotion. I don't know how representative that sample is of the whole population of Denso filter or if they have changed in the nearly 5 years.

If you were around when member river_rat did his filtering comparison tests, the Toyota/Denso filters came in at the bottom of the line-up too, which correlated with the Amsoil ISO test data. I doubt Toyota has made them any more efficient today than they were 5 years ago.

Well considering the fact that I just can't get excited about filtering efficiency at all, that's a hard sell. I've used the OEM Toyota or Denso filters almost exclusively on both my Toyotas since new, plus the OEM Honda on that car. I just can't see where it makes a difference.

But thanks for the link. Still though, there is no manufacturer data unlike for many other filters.

A great portion of the "3 months or 3,000 miles" slogan was just to generate sales on filters & oil! Truth. But the things weren't meant to stay on there forever.

Only thing I'd worry about is the gasket between the filter and your engine. If it's black rubber (nitrile), it may not last. UV light and general atmosphere will deplete rubber of its plasticizers.


And for anyone questioning the size of the oil flow holes on your filter...go measure the inner diameter of the spud/stud your engine's oil filter mount. I bet if you calculate the area of the spud/stud opening, its a lot smaller than the combined area of the flow holes. =)
