Fig Trees in cool winter areas...

My parents have some nice fig trees in So Cal. I love the green variety but the black/purple ones are good, too.

I pretty much didn't think they would grow here. So I'm walking down the road and VIOLA the Lebanese guy on the next street has a magnificent fig tree, and that sucker is loaded. Next time I see him, I'm gonna ask....

Do any of you weasels have experience with fig trees?
 
Here in northern hill country of Arkansas they will grow, but most springs there will be a late frost that will kill them back to he roots. Fruit will only bear on two (or more) year old wood, so most years there's no fruit.

I've found that the ideal place to put what you want is rarely the place that you really think it needs to go (if that makes sense).

Here we get heaps of frosts.

But picking the right spot, I get quite a few lemons a year (quite a few rotten ones too, as they don't freeze well.

Neighbours have palms growing pretty well, but need just the right aspect.
