If he gets a bunch of money, it'll set the template on how to use the system to get rich quick.

Disgusting.

Sooooo hoping that the City and the School District stands up to them.

What this lawyer is practicing here is on the edge of what could be considered legalized extortion.

There were plenty of mistakes made on both sides here.

Was it smart to bring an item looking like this to school? No.

However, school officials and the police didn't treat it like an explosive device. There was no evacuation of the school, suggesting that it was clear the device was safe.

The U.S Citizen juvenile was then arrested, held, and questioned without being given the opportunity to contact an attorney or his parents being notified. He was apparently uncooperative with police, which likely escalated things as well.

So, plenty of f-ups all around. Let's shake hands and move on. Unfortunately, if the statements about his detention are true, the police department likey created liability for themselves. Dealing with juveniles is tricky business, and questioning them after arrest without an attorney present is a great way to get yourself in hot water.

Golly!! I wonder if that invite to the White House still stands?

If people had looked into this more closely at the beginning they would have seen the father was a nut case and behind the whole thing.

Maybe he could make a vest and fill it with red-colored wooden rods, then walk into school. The whole thing was just a setup to see what would happen. Has there ever been a picture of Akmed's clock posted anywhere, so we could judge for ourselves how bomb-like it looked?

And I heard on the news last night that his family has moved to Qatar because they gave him a scholarship to go to school there. Do they really need the $15 mil?

If your posts are any indication, you're a reasonably smart person. I therefore find it hard to imagine that you're asking this question in good faith. Sorry.
+1

Telling point..... There was NO "school project" for which he was required to build a clock, or anything else. This was a setup. Google the parents for interesting info.

What I don't understand is how Google/MIT/NASA etc were falling all over the genius of taking an alarm clock apart.

A quarter pound of C4 would fit in that box. I'd like to see him try that where he is now. In an atmosphere where a kid can be tossed out for nibbling a pop tart into the rough shape of a "firearm" why would school authorities look the other way on this?

There have, but they're not very good. Apparently the thing is still in police custody.

I'm not sure how I feel about the idea of better photos being released. Most people look at any box with circuitry and wires coming out of it and think it "looks like a bomb." Especially when they've already been primed with a story about how the kid who put it together got arrested for bringing it to school. Even more so when the kid has a Muslim- or Middle Eastern-sounding name. Just basic human cognitive psychology.

Some slack could have been cut if there were a science fair in which he had entered, but the kid just walked in with the thing. I'm SURE the school authorities would have called in the police even if a blue eyed Swede were carrying one in that circumstance. As I said, a quarter pound of C4 would fit in that box, and children have been known to carry explosives in other parts of the world.

Teachers are supposed to be role models and I cry that we live in an era when a young inventor can't show something off without a very specific context like a science fair. There's class and there's the two minutes before class when kids get an adult outlook on life that might not be the same as their parents', or might just reinforce their parents'.

And if he was trolling, the administration should be ashamed that they took the bait. Ebola nurse trolled, and guys who legally carry assault rifles through parks hoping to catch cops' attention troll. Administrators get paid quite big bucks to do ONE JOB, and it's to... administrate. A huge lawsuit, like nothing else, shines light on their actions.
