Curious how well the new SN rated conventional oils will do with respect to reduced varnish build up with <5K OCI's after 30K , 40K miles ? While varnish supposedly doesn't hurt anything , it is a significant reason (cleanliness) to consider even a lower end synthetic or synthetic blend ... Your thoughts ?

While the SN GF5 should be an improvement. The greater than 5,000 mile oil change interval is where the SN should show the improvements. Engine cleanliness is like dry starts the words are known but not really understood. Usually the car is junked because of the $4,000 auto trans rebuild before a minimally maintained engine will fail.

If we really wanted to concentrate on the real destroyers of engines, we wouldn't worry about our oil changes so much. I've seen more engines trashed from coolant and overheating problems. If you've got a car with a timing belt, busted timing belts are probably a close second. I've owned some real junkers in my life, but none of them ended up in the junk yard from an oil problem.

Great responses! Next I'll be looking into which is the best coolant and the proper/best engine/coolant flushes! This is a great website!

Hi,
HappyLittlePony - You are correct. The major cause of engine issues in both cars, vans and heavy trucks is the cooling system

It has been this way almost forever - well at least for the last 50 years that I know of

Mostly, it is a lack of care and attention paid to the cooling system!

There is a nice section here on BITOG regarding coolant related topics ... So , less varnish OR same ammount of varnish with SN convwentional as compared to SM conventional ? Will the gap (i.e. cleanliness) between non - extended drain synthetics narrow even further with new SN conventional oils ? If so , could QS Green Bottle SN be the deal of the decade in a 5 qt. jug for $10.00 ? No way to tell short term - but a year from now these become very viable topics .
