I have a '92 Camry that we have spent way too much money repairing the past 2 years - over $2,000. Now, just a few weeks after spending $400 for a new muffler and pipe, the rest of the exhaust system is failing. Another $700 of repairs awaits me. The failures are all in the joints between pipes and the catalytic converter. All fairly rusted and the gaskets are falling out in pieces. Repair shop does not believe there will be enough of the flanges left to re-bolt the pieces together with new gaskets. Has anyone used a high temp putty to repair a joint like these? If so, which product and how long did your repair last?

I don't think the putty is going to work.

Those prices seem really high for exhaust work. A local shop I use here in town would fabricate a complete exhaust system for about what you paid for just the muffler and tailpipe.

I should add that the $400 was for a muffler, tailpipe and the pipe to the resonator. Still a big ouch. Camry mufflers are costly.

+1 ..and Joe's RDXS should be able to mate a pipe to anything. They will just cut it off at the flange and just weld it fast pipe to pipe. Done all the time. Aftermarket cats (universal) don't come with flanges. That's what wire feed is for.

Rock auto out of Wisconsin lists everything from manifold on back (except for a few small parts) for less than $300.
That encludes the cat.

Bosal is what Maxima uses - lasted 15 yrs the original.

$400 is a good price for that part, if it's OEM quality. Check the Bosal website - i'm curious if the Toyota's were like the Maxima's. Try to get all OEM pipes & gaksets.

You may want to coat it in Rustoleum High Temp spray paint. I painted my brand new one last yr. The flanges will rust regardless....it's normal to see them rust immediately.

I can believe $400. I just paid $300 for a muffler, pipe, and resonator on my Metro. Repair shop markup is no fun.

Can't help much regarding the putty, but if your system looks anything like mine, I can't see it lasting too long. It'll just rust out around the putty. If you plan on keeping it any length of time, I see a large repair bill in your future. The welding idea seems doable though.

Thanks to all who suggested going to an independent shop. I went to a local shop - non major muffler dealer - and they cut off the bad flange joint and welded in a patch for $85, plus welded a hanger that had rusted off and fixed a leaking joint from the muffler place repair. Willy also pointed out what he will be able to for a couple other potential areas of future concern with a similar lower cost.

You guys saved me and my daughter some serious coin! And I found a great place to take our vehicles for repairs. Thanks again!

It is basicly sodium silicate when the putty get's hot the water is driven off leaving behind a brittle patch. It starts to lose it waters around 210 degree's at a really fast rate. Usualy you use some type of fiber glass or mesh steel to reinforce the patch.

Exhausts are expensive.

I personally don't think so. Performance exhaust yes, but stock car stuff, some shops must see people coming. Performance mufflers for my RMS were $150 for the PAIR. 2.5" Over the Axle Pipes, Mandrel Bent were $70.00 from walker. The 2.5" Pypes Xpipe was $215. Tips and resonators vary.

Granted on my subaru I got 304SS 2.5" pipe from work, besides spending $30 on a muffler, It cost me $100 to have them bend it up and weld it together. They said with their pipe it would have only been $50 more or so. I am a repeat customer there though for exhausts.

+1 for rockauto.com
