This next oil change I plan on doing what the Honda manual states and change the oil filter every OTHER change. I do oil changes about every 4,500 miles. I was think about a FRAM Ultra or could a Purelator Pure One work? Thanx

Both are quality filters. More than likely you will find a Purolator PureOne for a much better price than the Fram Ultra. You can probably buy the P1's from AAP.com with a coupon code for a good price.

I've never done that as it seems wrong to leave up to a quart of dirty oil in the system. I can understand if filters for some cars are very expensive. And I guess some people take the filter off and drain it.

Note that the Fram Ultra is a different "class" than the P1. The Purolator equivalent to a Fram Ultra would be the Purolator Synthetic.

I have almost no doubt the Fram Ultra could handle the mileage. I am also pretty sure your P1 is up to the task as well.

Go with the Fram Ultra. Thats exactly what Im planning on doing for the next two OCI on the Accord, already have an Ultra on deck. They are priced very well for what you get. The pure one would probably work, but its paper media vs synthetic and has been known to tear and have end caps fall off. Only a small number do but still.

The fram ultra is rated for in excess of 10000 miles. I'm running an ultra for 20000 on this interval.
I've run puro classics and tough guards and napa golds for in excess of 10000 miles for many years now. When I dissected the filters there was no evidence of them being over saturated and I'm sure they would have been fine for longer had I left them.
In a known clean engine and quality filter will easily last 10000 miles. There simply just isn't enough contamination to trap and clog the filter if the engine is depositless.
In an unknown engine,or a known poorly maintained engine running a filter interval past the oem recommendation isn't a good idea, especially if trying to clean up the engine with some form of additive.
Every vehicle I own runs into astronomic mileages so I know my filter change regimen is sound. Others aren't as comfortable running extended intervals and that's their right. I know that as a filter traps contaminants it becomes more efficient and will trap smaller and smaller particulate, which will keep the oil cleaner than a new one, which translates to less potential wear.
If Honda says go 10000 miles before changing the filter then go ahead. Honda is legendary for their longevity so obviously they're maintenance schedules have proven themselves so why not follow their instructions.

Very true in most vehicles; however this is different in the case of Honda where 1 filter change is recommended for 2 OCIs by the manufacturer. IMO just be sure to use a high quality filter.

Me too, even on my Hondas.

I was about to ask the same thing. I'm planning to go with a FRAM Ultra and Sustina 0w20. for 7500 OCI. If the Filter is rated for 15,000 should I be ok to do it every other?

Yes

If engine is clean than Pure One as it has higher rated efficiency.

Also remember that if Honda recommend double interval, then Purolator should spec all their filters that cross reference to go that distance. So the distance on the box is irrelevant.

I reuse low/mid-range(OCOD, Puro Classic, Motorcraft ...) oil filters in my 350+k miles LS400 when it has dino with 6-7k/6mo OCI, with synthetic the OCI is 12-15k/12mo and filter is changed with 1 OCI.

The engine has no oil related problem other than the passenger valve cover developed a small leak, the bolts may need to be tighten a little after 20 years and 350+k miles.

Even the lowly OCOD oil filter can lasted much longer than 10k miles in a clean engine.

The manual belives your using honda fluid and honda filter, both are VERY VERY high quality stuff.

Overkill for the most part if you ask me,
either way if you using synthetic and you can get purclassic for cheap might as well change it with every oil change, other wise its not a big deal.

Unless your engine is dirty or your using [censored] filters , they can last lots of miles without much issues.

I have used fram with no probelms, but too many horror stories and not enough price diffrence for me to use it over purclassics.

People push purclassics and pur1's to 10k no problems.

Still are, they just moved production from Canada to the US... Technically it was Honeywell but...

They have specific media specified by Honda though...

And Finally a Filtech (A01)

Also no where in a Honda Maintenace schedule or Service Manual have I ever seen "Remove, Drain and Reinstall" FWIW.

I've heard some claim that the dry start up caused by the empty filter is causing more wear than dirty oil.

I guess you could try and pre-fill the filter with some fresh oil, but it will probably spill down the side of the block.

Maybe this is the reason Honda recommends two OCI per filter?
