Changing filter every other OCI?

I change the filter every time although certainly I have seen the every other OCI filter routine specified by manufacturers. I just figure that the combination of removing residual dirty oil and the might as well do it while you are at it theory make it worth the few bucks.

I think it is possibly true that a filter works better with some mileage on it, just as there seems to be empirical evidence that oil generates least wear after about 2000 miles.

I don't actually contend that my protocol is the right one. At base maybe just replacing it every 3000-6000 miles gives me some peace of mind that if I had suffered some mechanical failure in the filter that its not in their all that long. But then again I think its probably true that you could run a modern engine in full filter bypass for several thousand miles with no permanent damage.

Now if I bought cars new and maintained them from new I might be more inclined to trust my judgement on extended OCIs and filters. I tend to buy used cars with >100K on them and my GF's is a lease so I play it a little conservative.

For those insisting on swapping the filter on every other change. Would it be more beneficial to use a filter of half the cost (ST) and changing it on every OCI?

If you want to reuse a filter, I think it would be a good idea to take it off and let it drain some of the sludge out.
I had a big wix on my car and used it for the first arx cycle , which was 1500m. Then I did the OC and replaced it with a clean filter for the rinse cycle. I kept the big old wix and when I drained it there was a good amount of sludgy oil in there. But the filter was only used for 1500 miles, so on the next OCI I stuck it back on. I'll probably swap it out in a couple thousand miles, without doing an OC. But I wouldn't want to go more than say, 3-4k on a conventional filter.

On my Mitsubishi Fuso I usually leave the filters for two cycles. But it is only driven 4000 miles a year, so it is 2 oil changes and 1 set of filters (regular and by-pass) per year.

And on my the 76 Land Cruiser that my father-in-law drives 2000 miles a year I usually do the same.

With the advent of the superb Amsoil AE oil filters, I have begun to change them every other change. I am presently on my second go round with the AE filter. The oil looks cleaner than usual, other than that, there appears to be no difference.

I run Royal Purple oil and I chage my filter every 4,000 miles, and add a quart of oil. I would rather put a clean filter on there, but that is just me.

Yeah ..but if you had a warehouse of Royal Purple at jobber less 10% less 10% less 5% and had to pay $10 a piece for NAPA Gold filters what would you do
