I am used to seeing this on cars exposed to road salt.

On cars not exposed to road salt, I typically only see it on the Ford Focus or Pontiac Grand Am.

Yup, one on the rear of the 2000 Focus, was like that when we bought it. They were cheap to replace. Had broke about 3/4 of the way around from the top on one of the coils.

Wife's BMW had a broken spring (2000 328i), similar failure as the Focus.

Mustang had a broken front spring, broke right in the control arm, you'd never know it was broken, found it when I was swapping out some parts.

I've never seen one shatter though, that's a new one!

Had a 97 Windstar that Ford got in trouble with on the front springs. Ford's solution was to insert a small metal plate between the tire and the top of the spring so the tire wouldn't throw junk on the spring. Spring broke anyway. Ford had a warranty thing that they would replace the springs no charge if one broke before 10 years from original date of purchase. I was at 9 years, 11 months---lucked out on that one.
