Esso Superflo Synthetics

And how about this

Esso XD-3 Extra 0w-30 TBN 12.2 !

Is that the same 4 buck a quart 0w-40 oil some have been talking about but in a lighter viscosity ?

Glad to see some recognition of the Esso line, no I dont work for them in any shape or fashion. Reason I am praising them is the cost factor. You can get a good synthetic at a very resonable cost. As for your questions, when talking with the salesman at the bulk plant the Super-flo I was told was a decent oil but told it was only suited for passeneger car use. I never really got into it with him as I was more interested in the XD-3 line, and yes the 0w-40 you listed as well as the 0w-30 XD-3 are reported to be full PAO based (not exactly sure what that means, its good no?? :)The 0w-30 XD-3 can be had here for $4.19 per /L Canadian funds or approx $3.22 U.S funds. I can tell you one thing for sure, alot of contractors and mixed fleet owners around here run the XD-3 dino and have been impressed with the cost/performance aspect of the oil. I know the bus transit department here switched over from valvoline which wasnt meeting their needs to XD-3 and I was told the UOA's coming back were impressive. FWIW: Been running the 15w-40 and now the 10w-30 dino XD-3 for the summer and now fall months, soon to go 0w-30 for the true winter months. Oil seems to be cleaning something, comes out blacker then all get out at oil change time

Anyhow I hope this was of some benefit, will ask around about the superflo and get back to you.

Same here I forgot to mention that in the winter for fleet and diesel operators here the winter fomulations are extremly popular for cost performance reasons.

Anyone else using these oils? please chime in I would love to hear comments good or bad. Make yourselves known

Used to be a good thing but since the *buyout* merger* (Exxon gobbling Mobil up) things have changed. Esso and Exxon marketed a synthetic formulation that was truly cutting edge. I can't tell if it still exists or was shelved. Sorry I don't have the marketing name for you.

For instance is was much advanced over the exxon synthetic of the pre merger and very different ( heavy in ester technology vs. M1.

I might have posted info here years ago, please do a search on Exxon or Esso syns.

If I find the name of my Canadian contacts or the product name I will post it.

My brain just kicked in and I think the marketing name was "Ultra synthetic."

I've used XD-3 0W30 quite a bit. Can't get it year round though seems. Alot of guy out in the oil patch use 0w40 in diesel equipment and trucks.

I use it because it is cheap realative to other products. Certainly had excellent cold start, went way over the interval and never burned a drop. The mag plug was really clean too, relative to some other products.

I have to recommend this oil, even over Petro-Can because it is less costly.

I use to use Exxon Superflo Synthetic 5w30 in the late 90's. On sale at a small country department store I could get it for $2.75/qt. Mobil 1 and Syntec were about $5/qt. Alas the store is gone, they built a Walmart across the street

. I have 1 unopened quart left. I wonder whether the Superflo was a "real" syntetic group IV oil or a group III "wanabee". And no I'm not going to spend money to find out

Last year I had a friend who had horrific results with Superflo 5w30 synthetic. I won't swear that its a bad oil; it could have been a mechanical issue with his truck, but the stuff was shot in less than 4000km. He only did 2 UOA and switched brands so I don't have any hard evidence, but I would definitely do some trend analysis before buying too much. I used to use it also and it can be a real bargain.

There are hidden oils in every corner . It's all about price vs performance without regard to any other swing one can put on it and if that oil does the same or possibly even better at 1/2 the price of certain other synthetic oils ...... it's a winner for the end user .

I had to educate my local Esso bulk dealer that this 0-40 XD3 is a full synthetic POA based oil now thanks to all postings on this oil in here. He maintained it was still semi syn, I insisted he check his spec sheet. My concern is when I pick this oil up that I dont get the old semi syn oil stock. His price is $4.19 Can per litre bought per litre or 12 case lot, good deal.

As a note of interest on quality of this XD3 oil, Esso makes John Deere oil, I am told the only difference between Deere and Esso XD3 is price, most buy which ever is cheapest at time for their JD. John Deere is not a company who would bargain basement an oil for their diesels in my opinion.

I am now using 15-40 XD3 in my Dodge diesel for 2500kms, seems good. I just bought this 15-40 XD3 on sale for $2.19 at Esso bulk, regular price is $2.56 litre 12 case lot or 2.76 separate. I paid over $3.00 litre for 15-40 Duron dino by Petro Can. I will post analysis on Wally semi 15-40, Duron 15-40 dino and will post this XD3 15-40 dino analysis with my upcoming winter XD3 0-40 syn analysis. All four together in one post will show a decent comparison of oils this spring when last two analysis are done.

In my 92 Cummins I am going to use this XD3 0-40 year round from now on starting this fall before the cold winter starts. At $4.19 litre for full 100% POA syn oil how can one go wrong with this oil? Compared to Duron dino 15-40 it is only $12.00 Can more for a 12 litre OCI in a 92 Cummins, I can extend the OCI a bit too.

Super Flo is 5.75 per litre for 5-30 full syn oil. This XD3 0-40 I plan to use in my diesel now year round is recommended for gasoline and meets all my 2003 Altima requirements in API.
I have learned in this forum that diesel oils are substantually fortified and many members here use them in gas engines according to postings, I even use diesel oil in an old Honda four stroke motorcycle now.

Will this 0-40 XD3 actually be a better oil than a gas rated Super Flo syn for a 03 Altima?

One concern, my Nissan manual recomends a 5-30 oil year round, if a 0-40 syn XD3 can be used in a diesel year round, should not be problem with a Nissan 2500cc 4 banger gas, right?

thanks,
Cyprs

I did some research on the 0W30 and 0W40 XD-3 and decided to go with the '30' on all three cars(gas). Reason being that the 0W30 has almost identical specs at 40C and 100C as the German Castrol, which everyone here says is a very thick 30weight. the 40 is VERY thick, and I wasn't comfortable using it in a Honda 2.2, 3.2 and a Nissan 3.3.

they have fantastic specs though, the TBN was over 12.

Kinda thick there for that one .

XD3 0w-30
Motorcraft 0w-30
Pennzoil 0w-30 would be better choices year round .

All less than 5 bucks Canadian

I've ordered a case (4, 4L bottles) of the XD-3 0W30 for use in my vehicles. I expect to do my next oil change towards the end of October (I know, it's so far away). I thought the value was very good as well when you compare this oil to other synthetics.

Thanks, your right, if this 0-40 is thick based then it wont agree with these small engines, I am told these small engines need good flow through the tight bearing clearances.

As I mentioned I need a 5-30 oil for my Nissan, I looked up the Esso specs on Esso Superflo, a 100% syn oil and compared specs to the 0-30 XD3 which has been recommended to me in this forum.

Here is what I found, keep in mind the 5-30 superflo is $2.00 more than 0-30 XD3:

Esso 5-30 Superflo
Viscosity @ 100 C 10.4
Viscosity @ 40 C 52
TBN 8.6
