EPA possibly goes after the Start/Stop System!

Mine too, but the rentals I've had all had it. Interestingly enough we had a 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe recently that either had it permanent disabled or it didn't work. The engine never shut off, and I did nothing to disable the feature.
Same here.
I got them to hesitate very reliably. People think only the engine shuts off, but the transmission is also put into neutral. That’s what make them hesitate, the transmission doesn’t go into gear fast enough.

Good point! Some people claim it is seamless. I haven't driven one or been in one yet that I would call seamless. The worst was in a 2024 MB SUV a real estate broker was driving us around in. I would have disabled that ASAP. It was to the point where it was actually annoying, even my wife commented about it later that day. When the time comes for me to own a vehicle with it I'll be certain it can be disabled or won't be buying the car. As always opinions will vary, and it's good to have a flame suit or thick skin for these threads. ;)

Our Wrangler and newer 911 have it. My ritual is I get in, start, then push S/S off button/turn knob to Sport even before seatbelts, sunglasses, etc. Wrangler is getting one of the defeat systems and I'll figure out the Porsche at some point.

Don't get me going on how Jeep did their S/S system with a separate, small, short-lived battery up inside a front fender under the fuse and relay block....
Going to bump this bcs it’s horrendous …

They can be seamless but I’ve only experienced that in hybrids and that’s because they get going on battery power and then turn on the engine while moving if needed.

And that’s another crux to the start/stop debate. People don’t realize that in hybrids it works way different vs normal cars. The same can be said about the CVTs, hybrid CVTs are way different and reliable than traditional belt CVTs.

Not sure on the 911, but the memory key on the Macan remembers the button setting for Start/Stop. If I set it to "off" and program my my key with it set that way, it is always off. Same if I set the comfort settings preset I want.

Agreed. I was referring to ESS in a non-hybrid application. Yea you can trick it, adapt to it, etc. and thankfully disable it. It's just another technology forced upon us. If I had to bet if it was an option anyone who knows anything about cars would probably pass. Then possibly 75% of the remaining people would pass as well and pocket the savings. Maybe it will go away now. ;)

2/4 of mine have it - but there is a disable button on both …

I recently rented a 2025 Mustang with start/stop functionality, and it was awful. The engine didn’t always restart smoothly—it would give a little jolt almost every time. But that was the least of the problems. The car was actually dangerous to drive. Right out of the parking lot, the steering felt totally off—loose and unstable, like I was driving a worn-out ‘51 Buick. At highway speeds, the steering would firm up like it’s supposed to, but then it would lock into that stiffness and wouldn’t budge unless I forced it—exactly like when your power steering fails. Something was definitely wrong with the steering rack. When I turn the vehicle in, I reported my experience and of course they couldn’t have cared less. 🤷‍♂️

Man, guess I'm lucky, the VW works fine. Slightly lift off brake, engine is on/it is in gear, never comes out.

Works very well on the mg too. The only time it's not perfect if it has to restart while it was still stopping.

Now if I know it's going to be activating dozens of times in a few minutes, I turn it off, or put the engine in sports mode (ass turns off then) or adaptive cruise on (ass also off).

On the 911 S/S is assigned to the drive modes; normal, sport, sport plus, wet, etc. Unfortunately, in normal, the default, S/S cannot be disabled. Irritating....

You mean this little gem of a battery? Yup, this is how it came out after 2.5 years....

Let's be clear. Can you move your foot from the brake to the gas peddle before the motor starts? If so- what vehicle?

surely you would understand better if you could handle a manual transmission
Driving school (back when they taught manual driving) made a point that you never put it in neutral while at an intersection or anywhere except when parked. You would fail your driving exam if you did. It must remain in gear, clutch depressed, and ready to move in case of an emergency. Nobody actually does this, but it was a point to fail on if you did it. Oh, and no shifting in a turn, also a fail. Yes I'm old.

Interesting(thanks for the information). These days they are more focused on turning off the car as quickly as possible. At least here. What I meant was that I usually never have the clutch depressed more than necessary. Save on both legs and clutch😃

Like I said, it's not the engine, it's the transmission. My in laws BMW 320d will hesitate/delay and lurch a little when quickly and aggressively going off the brake pedal and onto the accelerator. It's sort off like putting the tranny from neutral to drive, there is a delay before the car actually starts moving.
I had a rental van (Citroen) that did the exact same thing. Under normal driving it was fine though.
