EPA possibly goes after the Start/Stop System!

Start stop saves fuel if the engine is off more than seven seconds. It wastes fuel any time less than seven seconds. On my VW and Jeep I hit the off button before I back out of the garage. In my case I’m definitely saving fuel by doing this as I seldom run into traffic that would stop me more than seven seconds. Additionally in the VW mine doesn’t activate unless I put decent pressure on it. Braking just enough to keep it from rolling forward and it rarely engages.

Here is EE’s video on the topic.

The sound of start stop is annoying? Rough life! Just kidding; each to his/her own. :ROFLMAO:

Maybe more EVs is an answer? 10 speed bikes? Maybe we should outlaw ICE altogether because of annoyance? :geek:

Now, the sound of that MBZ Bi-Turbo across the street... OMG! His wife's Tesla MYP? Meh...

The start/stop in my wife's Volvo (2022 XC60) is a system that is as near seamless and non intrusive as can be. It's ultra smooth-not in the slightest bit noisy and cycles very, very, quick.

Because that hesitation when you come to a stop sign is slightly dangerous
Yes! I have gotten rental cars to actually stumble on take off because of the stop/start, and it can be done with repeatability. I can see it being dangerous if I had to take off fast for whatever the reason when the engine is off at a stop. The first thing I do in a rental is shut it off!!!

I could actually test these concerns with zero to sixty runs using my Dragy in our Atlas...is there any difference with a 0-60 between it idling and with engine cut off from the auto stop/start? I don't think I can get to the gas fast enough before its starts.

How many people are trying to rob you? might want to choose different vacation spots

Not sure what you're talking about, my vacations have been stress free. I was able to get the rentals to stumble, that's all I said. I know quite a few people who had similar experiences. IIRC stop start left a good Bitog buddy stranded at an intersection a few years back. Your ESS works flawlessly, good for you, I disable it as do a lot of other people on the board.

Mine too, but the rentals I've had all had it. Interestingly enough we had a 2024 Hyundai Santa Fe recently that either had it permanent disabled or it didn't work. The engine never shut off, and I did nothing to disable the feature.

I have learned by owning one if you anticipate moving , slightly move your foot on the brake and engine starts. Same is true for steering input.

Isn’t the XC60 you have hybrid/PHEV anyway where start/stop is a given?

My local BMW dealership disables all of their loan vehicles that are not hybrid.

I wonder if that was the case with my DILs 2023 Sonata. My son bought the car new and the ESS feature was not working from day one. My son was happy about that, and never questioned it.

seI wasn't aware of any manuals that had start/stop installed. That was a benefit of my VW as opposed to its DSG counterparts...no start/stop.
Our Wrangler and newer 911 have it. My ritual is I get in, start, then push S/S off button/turn knob to Sport even before seatbelts, sunglasses, etc. Wrangler is getting one of the defeat systems and I'll figure out the Porsche at some point.

Don't get me going on how Jeep did their S/S system with a separate, small, short-lived battery up inside a front fender under the fuse and relay block....

I have tricked a few by putting them in N - with light pressure on the brake sitting at the light.
Six people getting off of their iPhones will give you enough time to pop in back in D LoL ...

Yes-but it's a very refined system.

This. It's all about learning to drive around/with a new system, just like the passive safety stuff. Folks hate change and blame it on anything they can to not like it. I've never struggled with it and do occasionally turn it off on the Atlas (only one of ours that has it). I rent vehicles all the time and never have any issues with the various manufacturer's stop/start systems. I can easily code out the Atlas's but have chosen not to bother, it has a physical switch that I can use if the stop/go traffic is causing it to be annoying.
