Engines under load from a cold start

Honestly though, what's the rush anyway? If grandma wanted a warm car, shoulda ran outside 5 mins earlier and let it idle. That's what I do when my loved ones are getting ready to go somewhere and the car is outside frozen. Works every time. No need to rev anything and cause excess engine wear.

Geez, so violent. I accomplished warming stepmom's SUV up in time. Whats with all the punching?

btw, stepdad is a censored. Its unrelated to the vehicle and the snow.

btw 2, stepmom asked me to get the car "warm" she wanted to go and directed me to warm it up.

We're not agreeing with your warm up method as it causes excess engine wear and in your case, transmission wear as well

Guys, ease up. I read the OP as just lacking an understanding of the additional wear caused by revving a cold engine. Many of us on this forum are not mechanics but come here to learn. Those who help to inform us without belittling us gain great respect quickly. Making us feel idiotic and small can make the good information you might be offering hard to accept.

Which means to go start the car and turn the heater on. Driving it around the block would have accomplished more.

yeah! I have people telling me they would club me with mag-lites and engage in a fist fight with me, for real!

On page 2 a poster can be seen agreeing with my warm-up method, though putting it in gear to simulate load (and not hitting the gas when i did that for obvious reasons) may have been over the top. I need to not club MY stepdad with a big long metal pole. Maybe i was diverting my attention by overthinking warmup, after i warmed it up. I could warm up a pot and really censor him over so if all he has are words and a snarky "it will warm itself up" attitude then thats fine.. i got it done faster.

its not like HE went and warmed it up. My stepmom asked ME to take care of it, and i did. He sits in his chair and watches football, we dont like each other so if it wasnt that it would be the noise of the computer keys clicking

makes no difference to me.

if i didnt respect it id have joyrode it around the block twice and said "there its warmed"

edit Artem: She wanted to basically 1. walk out of the house, having gotten ready and 2. got in her nice SUV to go on a dinner date with her friends, car feeling 100% ready. Me driving it around the block was not specified she told me to "warm it up fully" did not say anything else. its not my SUV ya know. This the one that does triple-duty for three people. its "Moms SUV" so

What concensus? Those who are not totally against it have stated that it PROBABLY isn't a big deal. I'm not sure what you're not getting, but what you did was wrong, plain and simple.

The MAJOR points are that it's not YOUR vehicle and it was entirely unnecessary to rev in the first place. You step-mom could not wait five more minutes while you let it idle to a sufficiently warm temp? You saved her what, three whole minutes? Where does some one so elderly need to be that she can't wait three more minutes???

1. You are correct. thats why i did what i did, to achieve her goal not purposely upset censoreds like stepdad and she expressed to me she wanted to 1. walk out of the house 2. step into vehicle 100% warmed, in that order.

2. Welcome to the world of my mom. At least its not my aunt with the Focus.

I hate my extended family. Everyone is full of urine and vinegar for no reason and i have some vindictive members to boot. Thats why i dont come over that much. I get kicked for doing something good.

I PROBABLY helped the process, thats what im saying. if i wanted to mess up the SUV, i could have., i could have redlined it for a minute until a piston came flying out the valve cover, not letting up at all. Thats not what i was trying to do. What i did DID help, if only a little bit.. what DIDNT help was trying to warm up the trans, simulating load with no motion. Come on.

I ascertained that what i did did not hurt the truck in the slightest, as my stepdad made it seem. I wont even share with him the result of this. He is asleep.

+1 to what MrRPM and oiltard said, im done with this thread. Maybe i should go out drinkin.

lets threaten to punch the guy because he did what hundreds of people do everyday.
many people live off of fast moving main roads, they start their car and take off out of their driveway and hit 55 all in about 60 seconds. that means possibly hitting 3k rpm under load not just being in park. Some people on this forum are sooo anal and emotional about their machines that they bring anger to a forum when gentle advice saying "dont do that" would be much more appropriate then saying "if thait wuz my car id beat ya in a hole dead, boy"

Agree 100% with everything in this post.

I can PM the video link to whoever wishes to see, but all it is is the RPMs going up to 3000 for about 10 seconds and the oil pressure going up accordingly, and the temp needle ticking up from 100.

The video captures the audio, this truck has the cold diesel sound - common on the 4.2L I6.

You've mentioned the oil pressure gauge a couple of times. Many people don't know that the op gauge on that vehicle (and many others) it is nothing more than a glorified idiot light. The computer controls the gauge and "guesses" at what the oil pressure is.

Also most of those engines have "cold carbon knock". I found that in the 6 years I had mine - that the only thing that helped at all was using Chevron gasoline and an occasional use of Seafoam in the gas tank.

Personally I would say you MAY have warmed the engine up a little sooner, but not enough to make it worth the risk. Mine always warmed up pretty quickly just by turning the key and letting the computer control it.

You would never ever touch one of my cars again, you might not even be allowed to ride in or even look at any of them.

Sounds to me like Stepdad was right and YOU were dead wrong. You state that he owns the SUV with your Mother. So he must take care of it and all the maintenance right? So why don't you respect him enough to do things as he asks? When you go buy one of your own you will get to treat it as bad as you want to. Just because you don't like the guy doesn't mean you get to abuse his stuff now does it. Abuse=doing things to a vehicle that the owner doesn't like.

25 degrees isn't that cold, and it certainly won't hurt it to get it to 3,000 RPM's soon after starting it. I've always warmed vehicles up by driving them, and never worried about staying below some random, imaginary number.

Sit back, take a deep breath, and read the original post carefully. It says ~25, not -25. The tilde means "approximately", not "minus" and that's a 50 degree difference from what you're barking about.

Sheesh.

I know what a freakin' tilde means tips, but I did mistake it for a minus sign. My mistake.

Regardless, I wouldn't be letting you drive one of my vehicles either. Shifting at 3K to get it up to 55Mph after less than a minute of firing up an engine that is at -13C is simply abusive.

Whether it "didn't hurt a thing" or not, well, I'm sure you'll find that one out later in your engine's life. Maybe you have magic Unicorn pistons and unobtanium cylinders that stay the same shape regardless of temperature, and run God's own oil that pours like water even at absolute zero. This way you don't need to worry about cylinder lubrication and out of round parts like the rest of us mere mortals with "regular" engines that are constrained to the laws of physics.

No, he does not, actually, he does not do ANY of that except use it and by "use it" i mean get driven to and from the dialysis unit of the hospital every day in the passenger seat of it, he cant drive, legally cant due to disability he has one leg. He even married into ownership and even THEN its still not HIS, its Stepmom's technically technically name on title and to Wells Fargo Vehicle Financing unit (bought from dealer in 2003 we owe on it and they threatened to repo it two months ago when we had no work, apparently stepmom owes $11000 on this 2003 GMC Envoy XL that was mint when we bought it and still is) so you can see the whooole picture. We do everything, thanks. All he does is.. well not really anything, but you are right he DOES like to feel important. i dont give him that satisfaction. Still. You make it seem like i had "malicious intent." You obviously arent reading what im saying.. i did what my STEPMOM wanted.

He had diddly to do with this until he inserted himself. I can appreciate you think im a tool here but i think you arent understanding that this is NOT his truck although he thinks it is and went spouting off at the mouth as if it was and as if there were a problem. I dont like that. Also, again, i helped warm it up. ?

Stepdad STILL didnt have anything relevant to say about the matter except "huff and puff." It has 5w30 motor oil in it, i found out it is likely synthetic, and he didnt have anything to do with the situation. how is this 'dead wrong'? Im missing something here.

I like Overkill's take on things lol.

EDIT: DragRace, oldmaninsc = understanding of the situation. ls1mike, Blkstanger = lets call the Police, we have a vehicle abuser.

Ive dealt with a LOT more in my life than this old man, see my handle. Every now and then, though, he makes me question what exactly people are THINKING. Maybe he felt like he had to say something, but it was less about the vehicle which has SOME basis in "dont rev a cold engine" - ok, i get that more NOW than at first.. still, its more about "him." And thats not cool.

You don't need to quickly warm up fuel injected engines. You're thinking of carbureted engines
that needed to get the intake manifold warm to help atomize the fuel. This is a 2003 vehicle.
