That's why I like my Ford 300. No chains, no belts - just gear driven.


But they are hard on oil and have a suspect oil pump. One of the few vehicles I use 3,000 mile oil changes on.

You won't get an argument from me on that. The previous owner treated oil as a lifetime fluid. With the oil pump less than ideal at the best of times, you can imagine how things went when the oil galleries were plugged solid.

They have to be harder on the oil than a system that does not have this internal stuff tearing and grinding..

One more reason I am glad to be running Redline oil in my 2.3L Ranger (2001), the other is that it has solid lifters that are not adjustable, so I figure to maximize the antiwear additive zddp, which is about double in Redline vs off-the-shelf oils.

Sure you want to go that far over the OLM OCI during the warranty period? Don't think Honda will make a warranty exception just because you used a synthetic.
 
I've owned a lot of chain and gear driven engines, and only a few belt driven ones. I'm not a fan of the belt driven motors because to me it seems asinine to have such a critical part of a motor's ability to operate be left to a rubber belt (although to be fair its a strong belt) makes my head hurt. But that's thread for another day...

I've run ford modular motors to some high miles, the highest being a '95 Thunderbird (4.6L) which I sold at 312K miles. I ran M1 for 8-10K OCIs for the first 150K, and then I switched to Amsoil and did 10K OCIs on average. I didn't do too many oil analyses on it, perhaps 1 every 60K miles, but the last one I did at 300K looked good. My cousin had a '98 Lincoln Mark 8 that had 325K miles when he sold it last year. He typically used dino with 4-5K OCIs. So either way you should be ok.

From what I understand (at least on some ford chain driven engines) going too long on your OCI can lead to issues with the plastic (!) tensioners that some of the ford engines use, but that only seems to show up under conditions of neglect; My cousin's co worker would fall under this, what with his Ford Focus that stopped running after 120K hard miles. When my cousin asked him what kind of maintenance he routinely did he responded with "none". He said he may have changed the oil 5 times over that mileage. Now a focus has belt, but something tells me a plastic tensioner might just quit on a chain driven motor just the same under these ridiculous conditions of neglect.
 
there are a few report of jump teeth on K24 from TSX and Accord. i am not sure aoubt CRV. from what i read, the chain got too loose, and sometimes lack of lubrication were the cause. so maybe keep an eye on the oil level. one reporting, the owner suspect he park the car side way at an angle, maybe contribute to the oil starvation on the morning start that cause the jump teeth.
