I just went through a sequence of M1 to Redline to M1 in my Buell XB9S. Since this engine is air cooled and right out there, the noise level is fairly clear and distinct.

My verdict! The M1 15W-50 is clearly a quieter motor oil than the Redline 20W-50 that I used in between. At first, I wasn't sure if I was imagining the increase in noise. However, when I switched back to M1, the difference was very clear indeed.

Go figure! I estimate the RL is like 30% nosier in this particular engine.

Thoughts?

Yes, it might be all in your head, or at least 75% so...

Just toss all that synthetic junk away, my son. Go back to Castrol mineral dino oil, and syn no more.

My comments-

Not all in my head. I had actually expected RL to be quieter. It clearly is not in this motor.

I would not use DINO in any machine I actual intend to keep.

Oh for you Ford guys, were you running M1 15W-50? Of course, you were not.

My comments are specific to the weight oils I mentioned. I make no assumption this noise issue is consistent across the M1 or RL oil lines.

brucelee; Did you ever track (drag strip time trial) that bad boy, and if so, what did it run stock and/or modded?? I know it's designed to be a great handling bike, not a sraight line only deal, but I was just curious, what with all that bottom end and light weight and all.

No, I have never timed the bike in the qtr. I did add the Buell race kit which did add so go to it. The magazine says 11.7 in qtr but who knows?

It is a nice torqey bike and handles really really well. Certainly there are faster straight line bikes but in the twisties, it is a TON of fun.

Thanks
