I put Mobil Synthetic into my Corolla back when it had 83K miles on it for the first time. I am the second ownerof the car since 76K and I am assuming the owner used conventional oil before this.

Well I am at 88K and I have not noticed any improvement in performance (nor did I expect it) and I am planning on changing the oil back to Castrol conventional with a PureOne filter in a few days.

In fact, the car consumed about a 1.5 quarts of oil during the 5000 miles it has been in there... It kind of scared me at first, but as long as it is not leaking I should be okay right?

You were not looking for performance improvements, so what were you looking for by switching the car to synthetic? Just curious what your reasoning was...

My main reason was that the drain interval would have been about 3 times less often. Every 8-10K or so.

If you are going to do 5k change intervals than a good quality conventional lube like Castrol should be more than up to the job. If consumption remains an issue you might want to try a high mileage type oil. For non turbo charged, non-arctic conditions with 5k mile or less change intervals there is really no advantage to running Mobil 1 as compared to good quality modern conventional lubes.
