I was looking at the new msds for the castrol edge Extended Protection and found that it does not appear to just be group III base oils anymore. However, I found a very interesting ingredient.

Fatty acids, tallow, compounds with triethanolamine

What is this additive?

Looking at the MSDS, Castrol EP might be a new product. Castrol FST only list lists one base oil; Castrol EP lists two different base oils.

If they keep the same basic additive package and improves the cold flow properties, this oil could have some serious potential.

Heres the new PDS

Interesting, it does not look like it's just a new marketing of Edge FST Ti the specs are a bit different.

A 10w30 with a VI of 172? Wow that's unusual!

Same Castrol confusing name games...now it's "Edge Extended Performance with Titanium FST". Really? Say that three time fast.

How about Edge EP or gold bottle Edge for here...

Ahhh! the GHS Safety Data Sheets. This new format requires that all the components in the chemical formula be shown (within reason). This may reveal some interesting things about the formulas of our favorite oils.

I for one will be checking out a lot of the new SDS's that companies will be putting out over the next year as GHS compliance in the US becomes mandatory.

It's more than unusual it's undoubtedly an error.
There is technically no way it's higher than the 166 of their 5w30. It's likely still in the 140-150 range like all other dino and GP III based 10w30s.
