"Duct tape was good...how about motor oil?"...

This is what I found myself thinking while watching an episode of mythbusters. I've always been a fan of the show but lately it seems like they are running out of ideas. The duct tape special was an exception. In fact, they did two full episodes on the fabled properties of duct tape.

This got me thinking, what are some urban legends you guys have heard about motor oil? Fabled uses/properties. Freak occurrences in which motor oil was intimately involved, etc. I don't mean myths that have been beaten to death on these forums (which oil is better type of myth). Urban legends.

When I was a kid I believed putting my dad's motor oil on my bike chain made me go faster. All it did was attract dust and dirt onto the chain but you couldn't tell me I was wrong!

Honda has said for years that in a pinch, you can run 10w30 in their trannies. It's not recommended for the long-term because motor oil is missing the friction modifiers.

I think its a myth that longer OCI's reduce oil usage in america. As long as you return oil to the proper place it is recycled or reused as fuel.

How can I get paid for used oil I return to Auto Zone?

Here`s something else we did when we were kids. We had these Daisy "pop" guns. The looked like single action bb guns,but would make a pop sound when you`d pull the trigger. They had a bright plastic cork at the end of the barrel. We took the corks out,poured a bit of motor oil down the barrel,and when we`d shoot them,smoke would come out of the barrel! We thought it was sooooooooo awesome!!!!!!!!!

I heard of old timers digging about a 6" wide x 6" deep trench around their homes and filling it with waste oil. They said it would stop termites and keep weeds from growing in the immediate area of the oil, even after the trench was filled. Talk about an EPA horror show. I'd guess it would probably work.

Synthetic woulda been even better.. Kidding, I kid, I Kid!!

I sprayed WD-40 on my Bike chain, very liberally. I must have been slow.
