So where I work we have a pretty big fleet, the mechanic can't always get to all the oil changes. We have a couple places the guys can take their vehicles to. One of our guys took his van in for a change, and after he left he noticed a vibration that wasn't there before. This was on Friday so Monday rolls around and he brings it into the shop for the mechanic to check it out. Long story sort of short he went through the whole van couldn't find anything, until he pulled the dipstick. Way overfull, so he drains the oil out and get's over 3 gallons out! He calls into the place that did it and the guy goes " yea the guy that did was complaining he couldn't get it on the lift and didn't want to jack it up". He didn't change the filter and didnt drain the oil, just added it. They have not done anything for us yet, but the mechanic was just a little upset as I would be. This is why I do my own work! Sorry for the long story, had to tell the tale.

A buddy of mine is a mechanic. A customer had a bad leak on a Jeep Cherokee but figured it was about a quart a day, so that's what he added without ever checking the oil. 4.5 gallons poured out. Leak fixed and it runs great at 260k miles. The 4.0L is near bulletproof

Had one come into shop smoking. Customer stated was running rough and with all the smoke I figured plugs fouled so I had him leave it and rent a room until mechanic came in next morning. Mechanic came in and seen ticket first thing and checked it out only to find way overfilled with oil and plugs fouled. Asked customer who did oil change and he stated "oil was changed before his trip and when he got gas and checked oil he didn't see any oil on stick so he added 5 quarts and still didn't see any but figured full" then went another tank same thing another 5 quarts then it started missing and smoking. 10 quarts overfilled.

Whatever. I don't believe this story for a second. The shop said that they couldn't get it on a lift, jack it up, couldn't get the filter off. or drain the oil - and they ADDED oil???? Are you trying to get some attention by posting some bogus story??? Not even a BAD shop would say this, let alone do it. Grow up.

Believe it or not it's true. I couldn't make this up. He was to lazy to jack it up.

I got a JDM 1.6L engine to replace my 320k D16Y7 with a blown head gasket, the engine ran amazingly for 12k averaging 28mpg combined 80%city 20%highway, I got my oil changes from Walmart, they pulled the dipstick hard enough to dislodge it from its position(assuming a common issue as my D16Y7 didn't have it) and never clicked it back in place, not only did it loose significant amount of power, it spilled oil all over the place while driving, 1K later engine made funny noise and I started to watch out for my oil levels from then on ( I was 20 and clueless about cars). I felt so bad because that JDM engine was so much more fun to drive then my D16Y7.

Thanks to great walmart technicians.

Since then I started to do my own oil changes and maintenance.

I absolutely believe this.

I have a similar story. I know a successful businessman who leases new cars every 4 years. Its his practice to not to a single thing to them. Never changes the oil, never gets them inspected. Drives em for 4 years and turns em in for a new one, Says its the next persons problem, not his.. True story

I have a few neighbors who do the same thing, or at least claim too. It is the #1 reason why I would never buy an off lease car.

With, "... Says its the next persons problem,..." we can add purely mean and malicious to antiqueshell's list of attributes.

When the neighbor said of her daughter's 2001 Audi A6 3.0L, "My husband keeps adding oil and it keeps smoking" and 12 quarts came out, I figure people are indeed highly ignorant of automotive matters. The husband is a gem of a guy. Kira

Problem is, some of these oil lube shops have multiple techs doing a service on a vehicle, and they don't always communicate with each other, and the owner, as they should. So, a shop could conceivably make this mistake. I admit, seems a little weird.

What's it to you dude? I doubt he came here just to fabricate some bogus story for you to get all bent out of shape about. Things like this do happen.

Ha, I was just reading a non-oil forum and saw an overfill story. A friend "changed" the other friends oil and never drained the the old oil... and the owner would add more oil when the oil pressure light cam on.

When you don't drain the oil but just add makeup oil, TBN will increase; however, TAN won't decrease. Adding makeup oil doesn't help reduce the TAN. Since TBN - TAN (TBN minus TAN) is the measure of the oil life, just adding makeup oil won't help you avoid oil changes. When TBN - TAN becomes too negative, you will start experiencing severe engine wear.
