Fellow dog owners, what kind of food do you feed your pup or dog? Breeder recommended purina pro plan. The pup loves it, is full of energy, and has a bright shiny coat. I did some research and found this was in the middle of the road for dog food. It has less grain fillers than cheap brands but not as much meat as the top brands. For the price of pro plan, $32 for 35lb bag, seems pretty decent compares to $50 for the other brands.

Blue Buffalo for one.

The other has to have prescription Royal Canin. Ingredient list doesn't make me happy, but I guess it solved her urine crystal problem.

I've also bought Solid Gold. Before we became "conscious" of what was in some dog foods, we fed both of them Nutro. Nutro isn't the best, but not the worst either.

Basically, I just look at the ingredient list and it is pretty easy to tell if it is full of junk or not.

This site was interesting too. They do an analysis of some foods.

My Aussie goes nuts over Purina One Smartblend, Chicken & Rice Formula. About $20 per 17 lbs @ WM, or feed mill. He looks good & is full of energy.

My current dog( 3 year old female Black Lab, Sadie )actually was started on Pro-Plan( Large Breed Puppy )by the breeder. I couldn't wait to get her off that corn based JUNK and onto a good food. I am currently feeding her Natural Balance Venison & Sweet Potato. My previous Lab, Thunder, was fed Wellness brand food with excellent results.

I am a firm believer in using dog foods that use human grade ingredients and that do not contain cheap fillers. Foods like Wellness, Natural Balance, Blue Buffalo, Taste Of The Wild, etc... Not only are these foods better for your dog health wise but when fed your dog is less likely to have ear issues and other allergy related skin problems due to the cheap fillers( corn and wheat are major causes of dog allergies ). While they may cost more per bag( same price for 15-18lbs as you are paying for 35 lbs )you feed a lot less of it to them so it breaks even. A lot less doggie poop to clean up too.

Now, more on Pro-Plan...

Pro-Plan is an "ok" dog food as long as you get one of the formulas like their Natural Selects line( think that is the name )that has quality ingredients. Most of the other versions of Pro-Plan have really cheap fillers like corn, corn gluten, wheat, poultry or other protein by-products, and so on. The top 5 ingredients in your dog food should be the protein( real stuff not by-products - the protein "meals" are ok if down the list a bit - wheat/corn/etc... meal = CHEAP filler and avoid )and then healthy fillers like rice, oatmeal, barely, flaxx seed, etc... plus veggies, sweet potatoes, & even fruits/berries.

If you find corn, corn/wheat meals, various glutens, by-products, etc... as main ingredients pass on the food or if you want to stay with PP, then IMO, move to a formula without it. Especially if you find corn in the ingredients( at all for me but definitely if at or near top of list ). Dogs can not digest it and all you get out of it being in the food is more poop to clean up.

So, IMO, if you want to use Pro-Plan use one of these forumlas listed below or look to a different brand with a better product. Of course with all of that said you say your dog is healthy, happy, and has plenty of energy and a good coat so you can always stay with what you are feeding now too. Despite all my rambling above there is something to the saying "if it ain't broke don't fix it!"

The better Pro-Plan formulas:( to the best of my knowledge no cheap fillers used )
Beef & Barley
Turkey & Barley
Chicken & Brown Rice
Salmon & Brown Rice

Hope this helps. Not only do I try and always give my dogs the best food I can for their overall health but I also hunt them hard every fall and winter( Sept-Feb ) for upland birds and waterfowl. I have to give them a good food so they can do their job. Pro-Plan is very popular with lots of people but to me it is really pretty poor quality. Well, unless it is one of those special formulas I list and then it moves up to OK+.

I feed the Prairie recipe to my dogs. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? To me it certainly is, but not for the budget minded. Not as expensive as some however.

True to BITOG form someone will soon chime in and say that premium all natural ingredient dog foods are not needed and to just buy whatever bulk 50lbs bag of name brand food is on sale at Wal-Mart.

I've fed my Shepard the higher quality Purina products (mostly Purina One), and Kirkland dog foods, which in the realm of dog foods compared to motor oil, are about a synthetic blend.

She's quite healthy in her old age. I certainly wouldn't feed her Alpo or Purina dog chow, but I'm too cheap to fork over an extra 100% for a super premium dog food with no corn and all meat meal ingredients.

I don't see a problem with Pro Plan; it's a good compromise between quality and price and it's much better then overpriced [censored] like Science Diet.

I always used Iams for my Chihuahua. I strayed away to another brand. He started scratching and ended up getting some sores. went back to the Iams, nice shiny coat, happy dog.

The post I just wrote. Was the grocery store brand that gave him open sores. Still feel guilty for cheaping out on his food.

AvoDerm Oven-Baked Original Beef for our lab. No Animal By-Products, No Corn and No Artificial Colors. Agree with other poster, this is much like should I use synthetic, conventional or a store-brand.

My two Mastiffs get Beneful dry and several large marrow bones a week. The Bull Mastiff inhales the food. I doubt if she tastes it.

The puppy tries to supplement her food with a frog from the pond. But at this point she is many many attempts and zero successes.

I get 4health Chicken & Rice from tractor supply. Its $25 for 35lbs.
Very good food. No beef, wheat, corn, soy, or by-products. And chicken and chicken meal are the first 2 ingredients.

2 out of my 3 dogs are allergic to beef and wheat and have very sensitive stomachs. (Both were abused severely before I rescued them) so buying dog food is tough if you don't want to spend a ton every month, but this is a great price and healthy.
All 3 have great shiny coats and really like the food.
