What do you feed your dog?

We feed our Akita and Husky Science Diet Large Breed Adult and they do well on it. Stool is firm, their coats are beautiful and they have plenty of energy.

The 2 boys here get Purina Kibbles and Chunks for the most part. The do get the 'undesirable' scraps but their main diet is the K&B.

The do very well with it.It keeps them healthy looking but not fat.

Occasionally they get Kibbles and Bits,by a different maker.

please read the ingredient list on Costcos Kirkland lamb and rice.40LB bag is 17.59, better specs than pro plan or purina one and several other premium brands.

Our lab is on a steady diet of Science Diet Lamb and Rice, with an occasional switch to Beef and Rice for a little "variety".

We used to feed him Iams, but he started having stomach troubles while we were feeding it to him, Switched to Science Diet, and no more troubles... My folks though feed a steady diet of Iams to their lab and have had no troubles.

I use Solid Gold or Innova. All natural ingrediants., not rendered slaughterhouse waste/rotted grain unfit for human consumption.

Neighbor is a holistic Vet and gave me info on rendering protein/grain used by most commercial dog food. Very disgusting. She sees so many animals with major allergy issues, skin issues, cancer etc. She attributes to mostly poor diet. She switches the diets off the commercial stuff to the lesser known brands with better ingrediants and solves most problems.

I Thought Science Diet was good when I got my first dog, hey it is recommended by Vets, right. After I switched, my dog (Foxhound) had better appetite, better coat and no more hot spots.

Here is a good link

Quote from link
"In 1995, Nature's Recipe pulled thousands of tons of dog food off the shelf after consumers complained that their dogs were vomiting and losing their appetite. Nature's Recipe's loss amounted to $20 million. The problem was a fungus that produced vomitoxin (an aflatoxin or "mycotoxin," a toxic substance produced by mold) contaminating the wheat. In 1999, another fungal toxin triggered the
recall of dry dog food made by Doane Pet Care at one of its plants, including Ol' Roy (Wal-Mart's brand) and 53 other brands. This time, the toxin killed 25 dogs."

I know more about oil than feeding my dog. I have a 14 month old, 110 lb. Great Pyrennes puppy. He will just go hungry rather than eat any of the commercial dog foods mentioned here. I have to go to the trouble of getting discounted, but still fine meats on sale to mix in. I've tried Science Diet, Alpo, Pedigree, etc. etc. He just doesn't like the dog foods!

Advice appreciated. Actually, it's trouble, but not that big of an expense. At least I know he's getting good lean meat without a lot of fat and junk. I can get chicken and beef to boil pretty cheap.

The other mutts (6)eat anything. I feed them Gravy Train w/ Alpo canned mix.

My dog eats whatever I eat...Burger King, home cooked meals, whatever-She gets the leftovers. Seems to have worked for 12 years. Neither one of us is starving. She is a Lab/Beagle mix....She thinks she is a short person with four legs and seems to expect to eat like a person. She is highly offended by dry dog food. Strangely enough she even likes salad....Go figure.

You should avoid feeding her stuff high in fat or sugar stuff though. Dogs can get kidney stones easily, because they can't handle sugar and they don't digest fat very well.

I just have a cat, almost 19 years old, and the only stuff he will eat is fresh fish or sliced uncooked chicken breast. Refuses to eat anything else, and its more convenient just to acquiese to his demands rather than to endure many sleepless nights of his demands for food.

He is in the mid stages of kidney failure, so don't know how much longer he will live.

pro plan and science diet.

that's the best food for cats. fresh raw meat.

i've spoken to my vet. he and I both agree that a dog will never voluntarily starve themselves. if there is food out, it might take a few days, but they will eat it. no use spoiling them.

seotaji,
I agree wholeheartedly that a dog will never starve itself.

Cats on the other hand are so vain that they will starve themselves if they are fed $100 caviar when it takes theiur fancy.

Back on topic, my Elkhound just ate a pound of sunflowers (whole sunflower heads, we've had a good lot of them this year).

Won't they be lovely when it's time to gether them tomorrow.

His quantity is limited to keep weight off his hips; getting elderly.

I keep a dozen chickens too, so he gets a raw egg once in a while.

We feed the DIAMOND brand dog food. Its the only cheap brand that is reccomended by our vets. At $16 a 40lb bag I may start eating it!

A Consumer Reports study a few years ago rated Ol' Roy from Wal*Mart is one of the best foods to feed to a dog. I was surprised a bit but not shocked.

haley10 , your dog may be eating too often. over the years I learned that dogs that eat 20% less calories than the bag recommends will live an average 2 years longer. keep in mind that dogs of the same size can vary alot in what it takes to maintain weight. I feed mine 4x a week and overall they get 20% less calories than daily recommendation. remember that coyotes and wolves dont eat on schedule. those longer breakes between meals help the body repair and lower wear on the organs. once a week I add a pound of raw turkey and another day I add 2 raw eggs to the costco lamb and rice food. lean and looking good at 10 yrs old.

Our 7 year old Lab, Sarah, gets Costco/Kirkland Lamb and Rice or Chicken and Rice. Terrific food for the money. Her coat is gorgeous, and her poops are small. Meat is the primary ingredient, and it has a Chondroitin/Glucosamine joint care package. She also gets apples, oranges, good table scraps, etc.

Thanks Texdog, I was thinking that the recommendations on volume were about like the 3K oci idea (sell more). I do fine on less calories myself.

The dog isn't getting a lot of activity in this bad weather either, so that's a factor also.

Is significant raw meat a good thing for a big dog? This breed is subject to the bloat. Are you using ground turkey or real stuff?
