I'm one of those people you boomers are talking about

have two dogs
my near 5 year old GSDxMalinois has been trained and worked with in public since the day I got him at four months old. He is non reactive and has zero interest in people unless I tell him it's ok. (get stopped half a dozen times minimum by people asking or wanting to interact with him tho)
He's far too busy scanning for 'danger' and focusing on me awaiting commands etc. Serious public discipline is 'work' for him. He is not relaxed until we get near home and he gets rewarded for his 'work'. He does not do all that great in say restaurants or a movie theater because he's a working dog that 'needs' to be accomplishing some type of task ALL the time.
He's so squared away I've had a ton of people asking me to train their dog.

I live less than a mile away from Wal-Mart and Home Depot so to get some exercise and training out of the way I almost always bring my boy. My girl was abused and neglected pretty badly by her previous owner so I am a lot more careful with her so she stays home more often. One of the convenience stores says no dogs so I just don't go there NBD.

anyway TLDR
I think dogs in stores etc. are fine as long as they are good and do not cause a ruckus or touch ANYTHING (even though I guarantee my guys noses are cleaner than the hands of the tweakers I live around)

If dogs are allowed (Home Depot) I have no problem with it and have taken ours several times.

I should add, that I do pay attention to other people's reactions. If they are clearly bothered or seem to have an issue, I'll vacate the area or go the other way to what I'm looking for. Pretty rare though, most people I've run across just want to pet her.

Agreed. No problems as long as they're allowed in the store or service animals. No otherwise. People who say their emotional support dogs are service dogs can go pound sand too.

I hate it. The Home Depot I frequent looks like a pet store on weekends and evenings. I shop there only if there is no other choice. I have complained to the store manager, but it fell on deaf ears.

I'm not a big fan of dogs. I guess being mauled as a child has something to do with it.

Home Depot is officially dog friendly at the corporate level and is a go to place for trainers. It's often the first public place people take their dogs for obedience practice and socialization.
Fwiw I believe Lowes and Nordstrom of all places are the same way.
It's sad that happened to you because a great dog is one of the best things in the world but unfortunately most people shouldn't have dogs period let alone ones capable of causing that kind of harm

Watched one grab an apple and slobber on a couple more. The guy working their threw out about 20lbs.

I wish the owner would have had to pay.

I'd have bought them if my dog did that.

I like dogs and kids that one is more on the "parent". but I dont like dogs licking my food

Sorry, but not interested in interacting with dogs when going about my business. Worse when inconvenienced because your dog did its business on the floor.

And no it’s not the dogs fault, it’s bad ownership.

I get it that in some weather conditions would not be good to leave an animal in the car. If you’re going to face those conditions, don’t bring it. Or have a helper. Yeah, sure, I know that’s not always viable. That doesn’t mean I want to see random dogs in the store.

None of that says I don’t accept them there. I just think it’s lousy of the owners to bring them, and Indont care to see a dog in the store. Unless it’s a pet store.

Do something about it. The rescue I volunteer at brought in 8 more dogs and 9 tiny puppies yesterday that were "at risk" at the overcrowded shelters they were at. There's a crisis right now, estimated 250,000 more dogs in shelters than a year ago. Post Covid owner's remorse. Go adopt a new best friend.

There's a crisis right now, estimated 250,000 more dogs in shelters than a year ago. Post Covid owner's remorse. Go adopt a new best friend.

The shelters here in northern California are packed as well and it's going to get a lot worse. Thanks to TV and movies more and more people are becoming aware of Malinois to the point I can get a pup for less than $200 bucks. About 1/3 of the shelters here are some type of shepherd breed as it is and if they can't handle GSDs your average person sure as heck cannot raise a mal.

This. It reflects the people, not the pets; they're animals that just go where their owners take them.

It's just part of the larger popular mindset now where people feel entitled to do whatever they wish, and think rules don't apply to them.

Every establishment can have a policy to accept, or not accept pets. Including restaurants. If they do, that's fine, no problem.

But, pets are not service animals, and there are laws that govern their presence in places like grocery stores for health and sanitary reasons.

If people want to treat their pets as proxy for children, again, no problem with that. But that doesn't entitle them to go to public spaces and flout the spirit, and letter of the rules.

Retailers find themselves in a tough spot, and don't want to attract bad publicity, and meek store personnel don't want to create incidents, so it continues.

Presence of mind while in public spaces (or driving) is sorely lacking, and creates situations that are entirely avoidable (or worse, dangerous).

Don’t get me started on dogs allowed in hotels. I travel for work and half the time I’m woken by a dog barking. Maybe we should start allowing cats too. That way they can use the hotel bed as a litter box.

I resemble that - but the inconsiderate people talking loud and slamming doors all hours are my biggest killer of sleep …
(Best kept secret: hotel doors can actually be closed softly)

I know this is off topic but adults that climb into the carts and sit their big bottoms in them bothers me more than any dog being in a cart. I have seen this several times at the walmart in my town. It is gross and extremely childish. I worry more about the adults back end in a buggy more than a dogs.

I can beat that.

Around here the teens/early college age kids love to ride around in the stores battery powered scooter things usually reserved for the walking challenged among us.. Not uncommon to see 2 or 3 of them riding around in a pack.

That's very sad to hear.
My last two dogs were rescues.
Right now I can't get a dog as I am going through some very serious issues and it wouldn't be a good idea but thanks.

Yes it bugs me. Also bugs me how folks let their dogs off the leash in parks/trails/neighborhoods. No idea when this whole "the rules don't apply to me" thing w/r to dogs started. Note. I have a dog/love dogs. "Oh is your dog friendly?" - lady with her dogs running all over the neighborhood walking trails that ran up to me/my dog on a walk causing all sorts of drama. "Not particularly" I responded. The look on her face was funny. Follow the freakin' rules....leash your dog in public or where required/signage calls for it. Why do you think you can walk into the grocery store or other business with your dog? People have lost their minds w/r to this. The rules don't apply to you, I get it.
