Do I Need To Change Filter Every 3000 Miles?

I'm running Mobil 1 in my 2007 GMC Sierra 6.0L crew cab. I've gone almost 4500 miles since my last oil change. The OLM shows 38% left. I read somewhere that you should change the filter every 3000 miles regardless of the OCI. Is this true?

If you're running a EAO or Mobil 1 filter.....NO, not true. OEM filter i am not aware of, and the rest from what i've read can go 5-6k no problem.

I'm a newbie, so this is just what i've picked up on here.

You running 5w30 in your truck?
We just got a GMC van with the 6.0 in it and it had that dreaded engine tick sound in it. Does yours have that?

I changed the breakin oil at 2k with Amsoil ASL 5w30 and EAO filter and the noise is completely gone. Hopefully it will stay gone thru the OCI, which will be next May.

It's unnecessary. Just run the same filter as long as you have the oil in the sump, and change it when you change the oil.

You would be wasting time and money, absolutely no reason to change the filter during an oil change interval whether that interval be 3000, 5000, 7,500 or 15,000 It will make no difference in Used Oil Analysis if you have one done.

Waste of time oil and money. Don't change it before changing the oil. If you had a sludge issue (which you obviously don't) then perhaps your filter would clog up or something but any filter will last till your OLM tells you to change or 12 months.

Absolutely no reason to change out the oil filter at 3,000 miles. A good quality standard filter (Purolator, PureOne, Wix, NAPA Gold or Silver etc) will go to 7,500 miles easily. Now if you are planning on a 10-12,000 mile OCI then a more expensive filter would be in order. Ed

No reason at all to change the filter. A major waste actually. Most common filters are good for 10K miles and the higher end filters 2-3x's that mileage.

If you use a quality filter, you can re-use it a few oil change intervals but would not exceed 15k miles with the filter. I think some manufactures recommend changing the filter every other oil change.

Exactly. On my Acura RSX, the manual recommends changing filter every other oil change. And they recommend the oil change at every 10k miles.

So thats 20k miles on the same filter.

I've cut apart a lot of used filters lately, and haven't sen any of them remotely clogged with particles after 3,000 to 4,000 miles. I think my biggest concern about running a filter for an extended period would be media degradation and possible collapse or tearing. I don't think a filter with cardboard endcaps should be used more than maybe 6,000 miles for a similar reason. If you run a quality filter with synthetic media and metal endcaps, I don't see the filter being used up in less than 15,000 miles unless there is something wrong with your engine, or the filter is extremely small.

If you have an oil pressure gauge, keep an eye on it. Note the minimum pressure on cold startup, and note the max pressure at operating temperature. If it doesn't deviate outside of those norms, you should be good to go.

SO, what if I change oil every 3 months, and 900 miles, and oil looks black n gettin thick? Would you change it every other, or go a good year? Envirnemnt around here in southwest ct, stron humid sumers, cold freeze winters, spring and autumn are hte only months that are stable.
I think Gary allen had once said, in a post i put in, he'd b a little concerened about combustion by product accumulation in the fitler media, with short trips.
What's everyone think?

I mean, my Chilton book, says to change oil filter every change, becuase you dont know what kinda contaminants mihgt be built up in hte filter. However, my chrysler book says, every other oil change.

Short trip usage. More % of time a fuel enrichment. More combustion byproducts. More moisture retention. Less time at the sweet spot of operation.

Taxi: Plenty of filter life. Less miles per gallon of fuel processed.

Long(er) trip usage: Lower % of time at fuel enrichment. Lower levels of combustion byproducts per mile. More time at the sweet spot of near zero insult.

Not change the filter at every oil change, common sense is change it. why comtaminate clean oil with a Dirty filter, penny pinching to the Extreme. Hope you don't wear the same undies for 3 days.

Why pay for a new filter when the one in service is still good? Oil life and filter life just don't match up under some situations.
