That's a good price, I also picked up some of the new API SP Gulf Western 10W30 semi-syn early this year at $10 each. It will be my top off oil.

I already talked about this oil in other threads but i really ask myself how can pour point be so low (-45c) and flash point be so high (245c) for such a cheap oil? These are similar to the SHU 5w40 and even better than most euro grp III 5w40 available. Also it is SN rated and the newer batches...

It is my observation that they are pumping up the retail prices on a lot of their oil lines (all retailers) to make the % discount look like a better deal....they should all be at the 1/2 price mark all the time, in my view.👍

I agree, never buy at full price, the real price is the about the half price mark, and that happens regularly enough.

One of the reasons I decided to post all these sales in one long thread, was that it made it easy to to compare to previous sales, and decide of the price is truly good, or just OK.

Unfortunately they updated the forum software, which stuffed up the formatting of the early posts. Still the info is there if you want it. In fact the Magnatec price above, is as good as or better than 2019 prices on page 1 or 2 of this thread.
 
Browsing the Repco catalogue I somehow stumbled on clearance stock of Valvoline Synpower 5w 30 XL-III for $13 per 5 litre bottle. I think it could be the best deal yet for me? I checked this morning and they are now out of stock.

Its rated mainly for VW applications (Low SAPS?) - We have a 1.0l VW polo in the family so I will use it in that and possibly my daily (3UZ-FE). Haven't seen any VOAs or UOAs.

That is a very good price, its VW 504/507, ACEA C3, MB 229.51, BMW LL-04, Porsche C30.
KV40 = 67.8 cSt
KV100 = 11.7 cSt
TBN = 6.7
VI = 169
PP = -45C
FP = 232C
CCS (-30C) = 5500 cP

So yeah, a thick but low SAPS 30 grade, but super high quality, those OEMs are tough.

I’ve used it once, or maybe the previous version. Not sure if the oil has changed or just the label. In my old oil burning Audi, it burnt this Shell stuff too. Penrite HPR30 was the oil that slowed down consumption.

Too be honest I would prefer a 15W40 or a 20W50, and skip the wide grade 15W50. It’s “synthetic technology”, which usually just means semi-synthetic.

Problem with GTL or Group III synthetic bases is that they only come in low viscosity base stock, like 4 cSt or 6 cSt. Meaning this 50 grade with a KV100 viscosity of over 16 cSt, needs a lot of Group II or a lot of polymer VII or probably both.

Something like GTX 15W40 UltraClean or Valvoline EngineArmour 15W40 would be my pick, both also semi-synthetic but with a narrower viscosity spread, so less VII.

Yes you are right I didn't see the old liqui moly trick 'synthetic technology'. I'm trying out the Nulon 15w50 full syn street and track oil next.

Good discount but the spec are pretty avg with only API SN, GF5 and Dexos1. If only Nulon comes with VW 504/507, Porsche A30 or MB 229.51 would be good.

I'm using this oil spec tool as a guide.

This thread has been quiet... I suspect costs are starting to push up the price of oils; and there are no good deals.

For eg. Castrol Edge 5w30 would always be on sale for circa $35 - Last time I saw it on sale it was $42.

My understanding is that the cost of base oil increase (after a time lag) following an increase in the price of crude oil - and that there is more pain to come!
