I've been given a 4 litre jug of Castrol Magnatec 10w40,which is now listed as API SN.The product data sheet says it is suitable for use in petrol and diesel engines where the manufacturer recommends an API SL/CF ACEA A3/B4 A3/B3 or earlier spec lubricant. The sulphated ash content is 1.3%,does this mean that the ZDDP content would be similar to an API SL oil, despite it claiming API SN? Are the A3/B4 oils less restricted on ZDDP Content?

Under API licensed oils, 40-grades were allowed higher zddp numbers than 20- and 30-grades. This is why you will see Castrol EDGE 0W-30 and 5W-30 A3/B4 listed as SL, but EDGE 0W-40 listed as SN. They all have the same amount of zddp, despite the different API license.

A3/B4 does not guarantee gigh Zinc but you can be more certain.
What car do you have any why do you want high zinc oil?

If you want a High Zinc 10W-40 :

Comma X-Flow Type XS 10W-40.
SL/CF , ACEA A3/B3
Has 0.11% Zinc = 1100ppm
