Difference between MB 229.71 -vs MB 229.72?

I was looking at at a Ravenol oil that holds both the MB-Freigabe 229.71 and MB-Freigabe 229.72 approval (https://bit.ly/3G0tmae).

I checked the Lubrizol comparison tool (https://online.lubrizol.com/relperftool/pc.html) to see if the 229.72 was listed, and it isn't.

Does anyone know what the difference is between these two specification? Maybe the 229.72 is brand new?

I too have seen this. 229.71 is the Mercedes spec 0w-20 and i started seeing it in 2018. 229.72 appears to be a revision that came out in 2021 but appears to be mostly the same from all that i could gather.

It seems like a dexos 1 gen 2 vs gen 3 kind of difference. Minor update and they're both low ash low viscosity oils but for now it's best to wait for more information until making conclusions.

The big difference for me is product availability, it's hard enough finding 229.71 oil and I looked at the MB BEVO list for 229.72 oils and those are even more difficult to come by. I can get 229.71 Castrol Edge EP 0w20 at Advance Auto Parts now as part of an oil change bundle which makes it a pretty good deal.

If MB 229.52 vs. MB 229.51 in the Afton specification handbook—September 2019 is a guide, the difference is that MB 229.72 has a lot better oxidation resistance and somewhat better fuel economy than MB 229.71 has.

Therefore, you could do a lot longer OCIs and experience somewhat better fuel economy with MB 229.72 than with MB 229.71.
