Diesel pickup trucks- dangerous, malicious drivers

We're you driving a prius? I recall dr dusty talking about going after Prius drivers and smoking them out.

Some in the MB diesel world did something opposite - slow cars, tailgaters, do a fuel dump to get them to back off.

I sure hope my occasional 100 mile a day commute in my 3500 dually isn't "giving me a bad image". It averages 23-24 MPG and I usually get diesel cheaper than gas. I also don't roll coal in intersections, or even accelerating.

Here's a little test for righteousness, though. Suppose you're pulling your 15,000lb 5th wheel behind a right lane idiot that is unable to maintain a given speed, plus or minus 5 MPH.

It appears as though most posters above would use their left turn signal to let the bumper to bumper stream of cars in the left lane know they'd like to pass the idiot, then patiently wait 10 miles for the opportunity. Quietly smiling as they pass the cruise-less one, if you can time it so it isn't during one of the bursts from 60 to 72 MPH.

I'm not that cool. I will calmly pass you without the finger, or any other useless gesture, in the hopes I can demonstrate my displeasure with a quick burst of black smoke.

I also ride a motorcycle. Lets bash V-twin riders that blip throttles incessantly at stoplights. What a waste...

Here its the guys in a lifted Z 71 Chevy truck to drive like idiots. California has mandatory smog test on any o2 or newer diesel truck so that put a dampener on the rolling coal guys after they had to spend $3000 to replace the catalytic converter they removed and remove the tuner. Plus motorists can call a number to report smoking cars too.
Btw my na ford will roll coal at 5000 ft or higher just because the air is too thin.

I try to leave the words "you don't need that" out of my automotive vocabulary. IMO if you love big trucks and you can afford to own and drive one, please enjoy yourself. I don't need a Porsche for anything, but I want one anyway.

But I think the people who are the focus of this discussion have basically crossed the line for different reasons.

I'd absolutely love a short bed, crew cab diesel pickup just to cruise around.

But sooting people is just another obnoxious behavior amongst the many that people in all vehicles of all types can do.

It just amazes me that people want to do it in new $40-60k pickups. Not cheap and surely not good for the engine.

People can drive whatever they want, but this thread is more about their actions on the road towards other drivers. I have no problem with diesel trucks. I do have a problem with the "coal rollers".

A guy did that in ABQ and wound up with 9MM holes in his tail gate, not the recommended procedure but I bet he thinks twice before he rolls someone again.

Why not just make the penalty for getting caught doing this sort of thing an exhaust re-route into the passenger compartment.

That way, the offender will get a good view of all that rolling coal

Shocked by that. Havent seen any yet but if that happened here cops would pull em over and give a 48hr warning to get inspected or get it off the road.they should do that everywhere...although i guess cops make no money doing that..

You're making our point here.

But come on, the dude is in the right lane, where's he supposed to go? Why smoke him? Why is that cool or even necessary?

This is how the "diesel dually" guys in my area operate too. Everyone else is in their way and they register their impatience with their pickups.

I believe OP is driving a first generation Honda Insight, so that puts him pretty close to prius.
also it's been some time since the car was produced so I don't think OP drives in everybody's way....

P.S. saw something similar yesterday: a F-250 blowing smoke at almost any intersection / acceleration. a heavy duty F-350 pulling a loaded trailer (just happen to be behind them for 1/2 mile) had a small puff.... guess who i can hear trough my closed windows ?

I leave my west coast mirrors extended because it's a pain to spend 20 minutes getting them readjusted after folding them in!

My F-350 gets better mileage than my Cherokee!

"Rolling Coal" was #2 in Jalopnik's Ten Car Mods That Make People Think You're an A-Hole list.

Conveniently, no muffler was #3 and lift kit was #10 in the same list... which likely also applies to many of these truck owners as well.

Do that around here, you might find the guy has an Uzi in his console!

You keep "demonstrating your displeasure" like that, without knowing who is behind the wheel of that car, and you may find that the driver of that car wishes to express their displeasure...either via Glock, or tagging your truck when you're not there, or just calling the cops on your aggressive driving...

As for your hope? I think you've already earned a bad image...I just hope you don't run across someone who thinks of themselves in terms of how tough they are...instead of accepting a social order in which the size of your vehicle determines your place in the hierarchy....If you find someone who thinks they're big enough (personally, not vehicle size) to "teach you a lesson" or to "express their displeasure", you may find the consequences more than you ever bargained for...

...and you will have invited that response...

Ignorance isn't restricted to just one type of vehicle.

Some state DMV's consider this information private and others consider it a matter of public record.

Thankfully I was never on the receiving end of such idiots.

I am sure some people think I am "rolling coal" but that is just what happens when I mash the throttle from a dead stop. In reality it isn't black smoke just a light haze of soot held in the cat.

After one pull it's gone to never return until I put around town for a while then it builds up. It is the nature of the beast, wish I could retrofit a passive DPF to clean it up.
