I stopped using DeWalt 15yrs ago when the battery life was a year max.

Must have been the 18V. I have 20VMax from 2010 that work ok. Don’t hold a charge like new but still pretty amazing given the use for 13 years

YES it was the 18V and 12V models I had. I have heard those 20V models hold up really well.

The Dewalt 20v battery, uses 5 cells in series.

18v battery packs, use 5 18650 cells in series. 4.0ah and larger capacity use 5 series 2 parallel.
There are some 21700 cells in power tool packs.

The difference?... nominal voltage vs closer to full charge voltage and the different rules for marketing such products in different regions.

My new Ridgids batteries, warm off charger are reading 20.38v.

4.2v x 5 is 21v.
3.6v x 5 is 18v.

The actual cells used in the battery pack, dictate how much voltage the battery can maintain when powering loads.

Beware of marketing.
