Delvac 1/M1 5W-40 unsatisfactory in my '02 SAAB 9-5 Aero

I have an '03 Aero. Just over 12 months old, with ~18,500 miles.

I drained the factory fill at 4,924 and replaced with M1 0W-40. That was in the car until the "free" service at 10,683. Not sure what the dealer used, the guy said "full synthetic" and the reciept said something about a 5W-30. Changed again myself at 14,414 and went with the M1 5W-40.

I haven't noticed any difference in performance, idle quality, or mileage with any of these oils. So, either my car doesn't care, or I don't have quite the nose for this stuff as you guys

I believe this SAAB motor is a turbo, if so then heat/humidity would have a tremendous effect on gas mileage. Unless the trip was the same road, same temp, same humidty and same wind comparing the gas mileage just isn't valid. Just a thought

For some reason I read 9-2 instead of 9-5. Disregard my previous comment -- you need ACEA A3 rated oil.

I am surprised the 5W-40 does not feel right. People on SAABNET have been very happy with Delvac 1.

I am currently using Delvac 1 in a SR20DET (2L Turbo) making 300hp. I switched from Motul 300V with Torco's MPZ additives. Noticed the engine was a lil noisier but performance wise its exactly the same... And fuel economy has not changed one bit.

I on the other hand bought 2 cases on M1 5W-40 based on the good results other Saab owners are getting. Who knows, maybe I'll go back to 0W-40, but I'll leave that to Blackstone's UOA report.

Sadly the 0w-30 is no more . My opinion is they really had them something there for the Ford owners

Honest question :

With those Eco-tec motors you Saab owners don't experience any cold start noise with the 5w-40 vs the 0w-40 or lighter oil in winter ? I have heard the timing chain rattle in the other Eco-tecs with 5w-30 dino in winter is why I ask .

this is a 9-5 topic . Are they even the same engine as the 9-3 ? 2003 and up for the Eco-tec?

Nope the 2.3l 9-5 engines aren't related to the Ecotec engines in the newer 9-3 (which is also found in various Saturns and other models). The name on the top of the 9-5 engine is "Ecopower". Iron block, AL heads, the design goes way back.

We bought our '99 9³ when it was nearly two years old & it had 16k miles on it. I immediately put Castrol Syntec 10W-30 in it & ran that for the next 23k mi here in Northern Colorado (about 2-1/2 yrs), changing it at 20k, 30k, & 39k mi. At that point I switched to M1 0W-40 & ran that for the next 11k mi. After close to a year & a half on that fill of 0W-40, I put in the new M1 5W-40.

I didn't notice any startup, idle, or engine noise differences between the 10W-30 Syntec & 0W-40 M1, regardless of the weather. I haven't had the opportunity to run the new 5W-40 in winter, but I'm certainly looking forward to it!
