Delta crash at Toronto

Didn’t see this until I already hit send.
I’m not qualified on a CRJ - so, I’m repeating what I found. And doing the same math as you have, coming up with a similar result for crosswind component.

Haven’t been to CYYR in quite a while - is the grass between runways pretty level?

I know there is a big embankment/ditch to the west of the field.

Still trying to figure out how they ended up flipped over.

I would bet that seatbelt release while hanging upside down resulted in some injuries. Even race car drivers, who are trained to know better, still release their belts in rollovers and injure themselves.
And then what do you do, you're standing on the ceiling with a bunch of other confused passengers trying to find the exits.

The flight crew should be well trained to get the passengers out, upside down or not. So many passengers are totally unaware that the job of the cabin crew is not to serve food and drinks, but to ensure passenger safety. They get little acknowledgement for a job well done during an emergency, but what they do can be critical.

The airport has cameras and pilots either taxiing out for departure for runway 23, or holding short of the runway, had to have seen what happened.

I agree, a possible wing tip strike seems suspicious to me.

Nose wheel is intact, to get a bounce ( FedEx MD11 Japan ) that high and out of control, I can’t see it happening without porpoising , breaking off the nose wheel and wrinkling the fuselage.

Here is the runway surface condition report when it landed. It wasn’t that bad.

RSC 23 5/5/5 10 PCT COMPACTED SNOW AND 25 PCT 1/8IN DRY SNOW, 10
PCT COMPACTED SNOW AND 25 PCT 1/8IN DRY SNOW, 10 PCT COMPACTED
SNOW AND 25 PCT 1/8IN DRY SNOW. 160FT WIDTH. REMAINING WIDTH
1/4IN DRY SNOW ON TOP OF COMPACTED SNOW. BLOWING SNOW. CHEMICAL
RESIDUE PRESENT

Here is the weather report issued at 19:00 universal time ( 14:00 local ). The plane landed at 14:12 local:

Trying to get my bearings on the location, but it looks like it went bad really early. I’d guess they either hit a wingtip right away, or they “planted it” (likely on purpose due to conditions) and a main gear collapsed.

That would have had to have been one heck of a hard landing to knock the wings off.

You would need to more than not flare, you would need to flare way too high and come down nose high hitting the tail and main gear.

This CRJ - 100 landed hard due to a bounce and the spoilers deploying and the wings stayed on despite the gear being destroyed.

Plane tilted hard right upon landing and appears to have done a 180 clockwise spin whilst also turning upside down. There was a fire that was quickly extinguished thankfully.
