Dealer add on prices.

Just to clarify that $28,000 figure is based on the payment amount multiplied by the payment term which is why I made my comment about not knowing anything about his financing details.

For all we know he could have a 400 credit score and he is dealing with one of those "we can get financing for anyone" type dealerships that charge 20+% interest as a requisite to obtain such financing.

Every single car deal I've ever done is unique and exclusive to the unique and exclusive circumstances, at the time of the deal, pertaining to that unique customer that I'm dealing with. If you just want to look at the price and the payments and try to deduce a conclusion from that alone, you are excluding at least 50% of the variables that reveal the reality of this unique and exclusive circumstance of a deal that exists at this time for this one customer.
ie. a Nissan dealer!

Chris,

Would a trailer receiver basket possibly be a solution for your Jeep hauling stuff?

I had a 2000 TJ, fully understand the challenges with moving stuff inside the Jeep. View attachment 283876
Agreed with this 100%

But if you’re buying something else, talk to @macarose, I’ll probably buy a car from him next year when I replace the Genesis. Consider this a warning Steven! 🤣

But if you do that, maybe private sale the truck and the Jeep, then you can put down like $10k-$12k.

I have been throwing around the idea of getting rid of my jeep and getting a small truck.

Saw a 2016 frontier last weekend so I inquired on it.

101k miles
No accidents
Regular oil changes reported to Carfax
$16xxx.xx

Salesman got back to me today.

They offered $500 for my jeep! Dealer is in Az so I'm guessing a jeep TJ would be easy to sell with all the off roading there.

After all the add ones and whatever else they came back with $380 per month for 72 months!

That $16k truck suddenly went to $28k! LOL

I mean I was born at night but not last night.
Jeeps gotta be worth 5-6 grand. Check kelly blue book to see for yourself

I've learned some tricks along the way (we custom ordered a GM at the very end of May, literally 5/31). Dallas, always 15-23 vehicles on the lot, while where I live in Philly, 0-4, usually 0, no discounts showing online, while Dallas, $6,000.

I think my purchase is straightforward. List price. Discount. So far so good. Rebate--educator appreciation, i.e. wife, $500. Good.

Now start adding 3 things. Doc fee--$477--it's debateable if this is legit and if it can be negotiated away. Web says no, instead, go for $477 more discount. Whatever, I've seen higher. Add registration--about $200. Now when I bought a used car in NYS, the law stated they had to refund any excess, and they did. A refund check was included when they FedEx the plates. Lastly, sales tax. That's unavoidable. So my purchase had list, 2 deductions, and 3 additions. Nothing else, nothing that was inexplicable. No protection, no ceramic coating, no wheel locks (they actually come with the vehicle and on the order/build sheet (as is a spare tire lock), yet I've seen dealers add $125 for something that's already included, c'mon now, I get it's legal because nobody knows, but is it right?)

2 confirmed tricks. 1--captive financing. We all can go to Navy Fed and say hey I'm not paying 7% that's nuts, I can get 4.09%! That's all fine and dandy, when dealers won't accept a check from Navy, nor any other financial institution, and still give you the advertised price!

The other one that is bizarre. Our sales manager said in MD, the "final price" they show, has freight added, even though destination's already in MSRP. On our car it was $2195, it's now $2595. So they too show a big maybe $6k discount. What is odd about it, well let me show you. $8025 is a large discount. But 6.99% is very high.

But to the $80,000, they add freight. Why? Destination is already included in MSRP. Freight on top of that?

So in reality, it's not an $8,025 discount. Freight happens to be one of the add ons items. What are the rest going to be? It's like buying from Will Ferrell

True. But the jeep is useless for carrying anything at all. I really need a small truck.

You ever try to get a 75lb bag of chicken scratch out of the rear seat of a jeep?
A friend of mine in TN used an old Buick sedan with the trunk lid removed for this kind of work. He referred to it as his "field car". He once picked me up at the airport and took me to dinner in it. That was an interesting evening. Many drinks were consumed.

He just posted a couple months ago that there are no "deals" out there any more. The used vehicle market will continue to be "challenging" .l

The used car market is challenging, especially when you go private. Word of mouth helps. Back in the day, I would take my floor jack with me to thoroughly check out a private sale used car to check underneath ( exhaust, leaks, etc ) Yeh, the seller didn't like my floor jack wheels on his asphalt driveway, so I would take a 1/4 sheet of 3'4" plywood so I wouldn't make marks on their " precious " driveway. Screw them. I was checking that car !!!!!!!

No dealer add ons on my cars. Private used sales. Tax is normally lower too. Enjoy you're new cars . If you got it, spend it. Can't take it with you :)
Our new car is double the most expensive new car I've ever purchased. Not a typo. I had to do some serious mental gymanastics. I've been joking around the first digit being Gordie Howe's number. If it weren't for my wife getting a $500 Educator appreciation discount, it would have been a 9 out the door.

Everything is expensive--the used car I purchased in 2016, drove 8.5 years and 70k, is selling for in some cases, the same or nearly what I paid. Stories are even better with used Hondas, which my mom got. So we either accept it, or we don't. Don't is the best course of action, i.e. don't buy any car, new, used, etc., it's a total waste of money sitting for 20-22 hours per day. Depreciating. There are mediocre colleges that cost the same amount as our car (elite colleges are almost that but not everyone pays that price out the door, where as with mediocre they do--think about Johns Hopkins medical school being free with an income phase out).

But I remind myself of the 2nd thing you said, and suddenly, it makes a heck of a lot more sense. That's why we went for the magnetic ride control and air ride with max trailering (just need to go out and buy a trailer now) 🤣

I really didn't do my due diligence when I bought my LS430 10 years old, in 2016. It cost the same as a 2014 (not a 2014.5) Camry with 35k miles (there were many available at the time that were prior courtesy cars), while the LS430 had 81k (in NYS this forced the warranty to 1 mo/1000, if 79.9k miles it would have been 3 mo/3000.

I was smitten that it was a FLA car and it looked great compared to the others I had seen. Brakes pulsated and driver door actuator didn't even work (common issue), discovered after I took delivery. Since I had gotten it from a new car dealer (Buick GMC), they fixed the above with OE parts no charge. Obviously if a private party I woulda been DIY right off the bat, but also saying I got ripped off. That's why I know better with this car today. Look at the brake fluid, most are black--people literally will post a pic of their car showing that because many don't care, but to me it's indicative of a lack of attention. Or, there is zero coolant in the reservoir nor the radiator that can be seen (not a leak, evaporation over 10 years). Probably a PPI at an indie would have been my best course of action. Well it's been 8.5 years driving it, and it's a daily driver so it worked out.

When we went to buy the Toyota, they tried to tack on all kinds of stuff. My wife went to look at it first to see if she liked it. Before I got there the salesman handed her a piece of paper which had three monthly payment amounts, all over $1000, and nothing else. He asked her which one she wanted and pushed her to move forward with the purchase. Of course she stalled to give me time to get there. Once there I called out the lack of info and asked for the breakdown. He tacked on a warranty, full maintenance package, and high interest rate. Didn’t even check her credit or anything. I wonder how many people they get caught up with that little trick. I got everything peeled off and we agreed to a reasonable sell price with financing through them. Shortly after I went to my bank and refinanced for better terms. I’m pretty sure the salesman missed out on some commission from losing the financing, but I don’t really care. He wanted to play games, so chalk it up to the game.

Interesting point, do they lose commission when you refi? I would think not. The days of pre payment penalties are long gone. Our sales manager even encouraged it, saying we know rates are dropping. You can refi at Navy once the rates drop. If you went with them now, you couldn't. I was willing to work backwards. Initially, by my calculations our new car would be $466/mo. I increased the amount borrowed to $500/mo. I know it's affordable as I shed both healthcare and FSA back in 2023, these are easily over $1000/mo. So in my mind I can do $500. Amazing a lease is almost $1500 for four years. Who would do that? I thought leasing meant cheap, you can get something you can't really afford. Ultra-low mileage? 48 months, the warranty is only 36. Well-qualified? $1,472/mo seems silly. It has to be the $3,972 that is attractive. The sales tax alone is more than that.

edit I have never leased before, does the below mean that yes, $1,472/mo, but you'd have to add sales tax to the $3,972 due? That would be insane sales tax is around $5,300. Now the below does assume list price, and of course nobody pays list so the number should be a little lower.

That lease is ridiculous.

My understanding is they lose out on the commission/incentive/whatever you call it unless a certain amount of payments are made. I can’t even remember if I made one payment or not before refinancing. But if I did, it was only the one.
