I've learned some tricks along the way (we custom ordered a GM at the very end of May, literally 5/31). Dallas, always 15-23 vehicles on the lot, while where I live in Philly, 0-4, usually 0, no discounts showing online, while Dallas, $6,000.
I think my purchase is straightforward. List price. Discount. So far so good. Rebate--educator appreciation, i.e. wife, $500. Good.
Now start adding 3 things. Doc fee--$477--it's debateable if this is legit and if it can be negotiated away. Web says no, instead, go for $477 more discount. Whatever, I've seen higher. Add registration--about $200. Now when I bought a used car in NYS, the law stated they had to refund any excess, and they did. A refund check was included when they FedEx the plates. Lastly, sales tax. That's unavoidable. So my purchase had list, 2 deductions, and 3 additions. Nothing else, nothing that was inexplicable. No protection, no ceramic coating, no wheel locks (they actually come with the vehicle and on the order/build sheet (as is a spare tire lock), yet I've seen dealers add $125 for something that's already included, c'mon now, I get it's legal because nobody knows, but is it right?)
2 confirmed tricks. 1--captive financing. We all can go to Navy Fed and say hey I'm not paying 7% that's nuts, I can get 4.09%! That's all fine and dandy, when dealers won't accept a check from Navy, nor any other financial institution, and still give you the advertised price!
The other one that is bizarre. Our sales manager said in MD, the "final price" they show, has freight added, even though destination's already in MSRP. On our car it was $2195, it's now $2595. So they too show a big maybe $6k discount. What is odd about it, well let me show you. $8025 is a large discount. But 6.99% is very high.
But to the $80,000, they add freight. Why? Destination is already included in MSRP. Freight on top of that?
So in reality, it's not an $8,025 discount. Freight happens to be one of the add ons items. What are the rest going to be? It's like buying from Will Ferrell
